Default spare tire bolt keeps getting loose

Like the title says, my bolt keeps backing out. I had to weld in a replacement nut a while back and later lost the spare tire at highway speed. Yesterday I was under the truck and put my hand on the spare as I was moving around. It moved and the bolt was almost backed out all the way again. Anyone else have a similar issue? I guess I should put a jam nut on the bolt. This is not an original bolt by the way, just a standard thread of about the right size.

U can switch to a fine thread. Have u tried a lock washer? Some medium lock tight also.

Never had that problem, but the original bolt has a tapered seat on the bottom of the head where it contacts the carrier. I suspect that was there to keep it from backing out. A stud and lug nut would probably be a good replacement if finding an original proves tricky.

If I remember, this is mentioned in the "quirks" manual as it was a problem from the beginning.
