Default Borg Warner quadratrac transfer case

I started a small block Chevy conversion on my truck last fall. I worked on it some this past winter but life keeps getting in the way. I haven't had much time for wrenching since winter.

I'm starting to wonder if I should continue in the direction I started in. I was planning on leaving the original NP 200 transfer case. After all the complaints I keep hearing about heat issues I am wondering if I would be happier going to a married setup.

I used to have a CJ-7 with a quadratrac. I had the AMC TH400 swapped into a GM TH400 case and converted my CJ to a small block chevy. The cool thing about this setup (aside from the fact I already have one not being used) is the transfer case has offset outputs the same as the 200.

I have heard all the complaints about the quadratrac case but really had relatively few problems with it for the 15 years I used it.

Has anybody used a quadratrac in their truck?

I LOVE the concept behind Quadratrac, but the cases definitely have issues. I have had chain problems, replace the chain, only to blow out low range and this was on a STOCK Wagoneer (tires, engine, etc.). I sold another one out of one of my parts Jeep to a guy I met at a truck pull that blew out his third(!) one out of his STOCK Wagoneer. I have met many other people that blown them up.

So no, I would never consider swapping a Quadratrac into an M715. If you love the full time 4wd and offset rear, look at 91-07 Land Cruiser transfer cases, a stout gear driven fulltime 4wd unit, 2.48 low with 3.1 gearset available. There are adapters that can mate T400 to them (not cheap).

Or just put in a 205.

I had a quadratrac in my '79 J-10 - drove it for 120,000 with no problems, BUT, I didn't wheel that truck much.

As parts are getting rarer for those, I would also suggest looking for a mated GM tranny/xfer combo, or go to a 205.

Ian (iirc?) with his scary jeep had a quadratrac that he was really gungho about. He lived around Fort Collins Colorado which is really close to the mountains. He never complained about his Qtrac 4 wheeling. My biggest concern would be, like Rich, that parts are going to be much harder to find. Having it in hand would make it more tempting but I will never regret going to the np205.
    Come and take it
