If engine fires, than the batteries are fine. Have a look in the carb and at the timerchain. What is about vacuum and fuel pump or inline filter? There are many choices to choose from. Tank must get air for loss of fuel. Is the valve ok?
Ignition switch set before starting the engine?
Online manuals will give you a lot of help too, just at the top of this page.
How is the fuel pump and diaphram? Once the truck is running, did you try keeping it running by priming it? their's so many things it could be as long as it fires initially.

hi. the jeep had had a carb off a running truck. it also has the tropical fuel pump and a primer.. the diophram is fine i took it off and changed it for new... the tank has been off and clean'd also. when i first changed points and coil and condeser it fired on the button with out any effort then a few days latter it started to take longer and longer it fires then dies... i can do this a few times then once warmer it seems to run fine. but meny times it drains the batts before it runs..... its liek it jsut needs a bit extra turn on engine to keep it fired up.
I don't have much experience with these engines, but my 67 mustang engine would start then die as soon as I pushed the gas pedal since the weights on the distributor were stuck. Have you checked timing?
I have a snowmobile that would do the same thing. It would start hard, run for a few then quit. It ended up being a plugged fuel line. I figured it out by putting a clear fuel filter in line before and after the fuel pump and started looking at them when the engine died. What I realized was the filter was empty between the tank and the pump. I replaced my fuel line and it's been running fine since.
Just changed out the dual fuel filters on my 77 Cherokee to fix, what sounds like, the same symptoms. Start at the cheapest fix and move on up I guess.
