Thread: generator not charging

    Default generator not charging

My generator is not charging the batteries. I have the wire going to the foot switch then on to the batteries, and I have the wire that goes to #468 on the diagram. The diagram also shows a ground circut wire #3 that I dont seem to have. Where does it connect on the generator and where does it ground to?

    Thanks

The alternator has the big positive wire from the batteries under the little cap/cover. Then the small wire with the pachard fitting that goes to the on/off switch and "excites" the alternator. Then you have the ground wire. Depending on which of the three different versions of the 24 volt militAry alternator. There should be a ground lug somewhere on the back far away from the positive connections.

You can run the ground strap to the engine, alternator mount or just about any other place you can reach.

Make sure you are getting 24 volts to the main connection and that the excite wire has 24 volts with the switch on.
Remember if you didn't build it you can't call it yours.

I have seen the ground wire, most often, run to the bolt hole inboard of the long slot on the upper alternator bracket, the adjuster.

I have occasionally seen it on water pump bolts and an intake stud as well.
