Thread: What the heck is in my fuel tank?

Question What the heck is in my fuel tank?

I removed the stock fuel tank today in preparation for my 360 magnum fuel system install. I'm going to sell this tank and install one from a Durango. When I was inspecting my tank I seen what I thought was rust inside. Upon further inspection it almost looks like a coating of some sort. BRIGHT red and hard as rock. Anyone have ny thoughts? No problems stopping up fuel filters or anything like that. Only leak on the tank is the drain plug. Somebody get me their email so I can send some pics if they will post them. No luck posting pics with my blackberry!

Sounds like it was sealed in the past. There is/was a company and I can't remember the name now, that made a coating that was about the shade of red primer. It was pretty good stuff, but I don't know how it would stand up to the ethanol today.

Well I was thinking some type of coating. The guy that restored it and did most of the previos mods worked at a military truck resto shop so that makes sense. Outside covered in some kind of thick black paint that seems to be holding up well. I was thinking about posting it for $250 plus shipping. Sound good for one of these?

Sounds like a product the radiator shops use called red-cote. I used it in an m37 tank years ago with no problems.

As for the price my vague recollection is that some guys have built or bought stainless tanks for about that price... so you may or may not find a buyer. Who knows though, someone might really want one for a stock restoration...

I had my tank sealed this past July. The color of the sealer was red and the tank was covered on the outside with a thick black substance. Sealer will stand up to all of today's fuels except racing fuel.
