When I was at Vintage Power Wagons, I talked to Dave, the owner, about the windshield pads you are looking for. They sell it off a roll of the stuff that they cut and send you. I think it was $5 or so...need to ask them for sure, but it is the same stuff that was on there originally and looks like brand new...it may be used on other mil vehicles for the same purpose...he knew right away what I wanted and went and sliced me off 2 pieces.
As far as the paint...I have never tried stripping it myself, but I think just about everyone who has reports the same dilemma...really hard to get off compared to other paints and if its in good shape, why not leave it...I know several guys have just left it and I have never heard someone say they regretted it.
