Thread: Auto trans

    Question Auto trans

After getting my AMC360 and T98/T18 installed, working out the hydraulic clutch, and working out all the issues - I kinda wish I went with an auto. It would make the truck nicer to drive in the city (especially with all the hills around here).

What is the best option? A TH400 from a AMC car? I am a total auto tran newb - what is required for hook up on a TH400? Isn't there some sort of electric kick down switch that has to be set up?

Would I be better to find an OD trans? Everything I have looked at requires a bunch of electrical do-dads. Don't want that.

    School me o' learned ones...

First time poster here and havent even picked up my new 67 M715 yet. However I know my fare share about swapping drivetrains and parts etc. For a auto for your rig you want a 727 from a jeep pickup. Not sure on the application one would find with a 400 behind a 360. The 727 was made for many years and is a stout tranny. Is your t/c still divorced? You could swap a 727/Np208 combo from a pickup and then deal with new driveshafts, Also for a auto swap either a new radiator with the tranny cooler built in or just mount the largest cooler you can fit in front of your existing radiator.

I know that the TH400 was found behind the AMC360 in both some FSJ and some AMC muscle cars.

I am told you can covert a 4wd TH400 to 2wd by changing the output shaft and tailhousing. I believe that the late TH400 in the Jeeps had an AMC case so no adapter was needed.

My radiator is out of the FSJ donor truck so it has the oil cooler in it.

You could get a AMC turbo 400 from a waggy and then convert it to a 2wd rear output. My last response I didnt know you were considering changing over the outputs.

Not that I'm an auto expert myself but a few thoughts are to go with a 727 and a Dana 300. You might need some lift to clear the front driveshaft but that's one swap option. The other is to find a FSJ with Th400 and Dana 20. They are less common as most had the quadratrac. The 727's in FSJ's had NP boxes behind them with drivers side drop, not sure if you want to swap the front end as well but those are the FSJ options.

The problem is there's no overdrive which you might look into if you're going through the trouble, I just don't know much about the newer OD trans.

And yes they did come in full size jeeps--there was one in the J truck I parted but it was backed by a quadratrac tc.

    Default Here is another option

Here is something I just discovered recently :

turn that 3 speed auto into a six speed or put it behind your t/c for better
gas mileage when using 2wd high on the freeway.

Holy shnickies.... that's cool and all, but $3k for just the parts, then you have to install it... For me, there's a lot of other things that I could do to address the prob w/$3k

Those planetary add-on OD's are way cool but very pricey. For that 3k you can get a 5.7l & T-56 out of a Camaro and already have double OD. I'd look for an old Ranger unit first - good luck finding one though
Would be cool to split gears in the middle of a hill climb or mud hole - especially with a manual transmission.

    I picked up a frame with a 500 caddy,BOP turbo 400,dana 200, corporate 14 bolt, kingpin dana 60.
I gave the engine and tranny to a friend.
I can probably get the output shaft if you can use it. I have the modified cross member if your interested.
Just give me a yell if I can help.
