    axle u joint fluid
    Post by buggles911 on Jul 26, 2006, 7:32am

    Hello,
I just purchased my first M 715 and I am thrilled!!!!
I spent a lot of time looking and finally found what I was looking for. I spent a lot of time here on the zone reading everything and I have to say thank you to everyone who made this place what it is. I know more now about my M 715 than I do about my girlfriend!! I do have one question concerning my axle u joint fluid. I read all the tech. manuals and still have no idea how to drain them and what fluid to use? I found the fill plugs and these are the last fluids I need to change. I would appreciate any help with this. As soon as I have a little more time I will post the full bio of the vehicle and post some pictures.

Do you mean axle or U joints? Ujoints use grease. the axles use 90 wieght oil

some use gear oil, others use a mix of gear oil and grease. i would push as much grease as you can get in knuckle. to clean out the old grease its a little involved, pulling the hub and spindle, but not to difficult. check the online manuals for the steps involved.

ETA: unless your seal is bad i would just fill it, and clean it the next time you pull your hubs/brakes apart.

Yep, the military closed knuckles use grease...just like one would use for the Ujoints in the driveshafts...

I pulled the fill plugs and they were packed full of grease. Misunderstood lube order "B-30". I didn't think the knuckles were full of gear oil, but wanted to be sure. Any recommendations on grease grade and how not to cover myself from head to toe when changing? Thank you

I used Lucas Red Grease, filled knuckles with the grease gun til they were full. Use latex gloves for cleaning or degreasing , then throw them away and grab another pair. A box is only about 8 or 10 bucks.

Don't get ridiculously carried away, you'll put unecessary drag on the drive train...I think it was brian who had grease shoved 1/2 way down the axle shafts.
