    M101A1 wheels on my M715?
Post by grantshire on Jul 19, 2006, 6:43am

A friend gave me a 1967 M101A1 in pretty nice condition. The tires on it are mint - the spare has never been on the ground! The rims look to be the same as my M715 and the two tires on the axle are new (and not the non directional military tire like the spare and the old ones on my M715).

I decided to swap the tires last Sunday and got the wheels off the M715. I ran into problems taking the wheels off the trailer. My M715 lug nuts are 1" but it looked like the trailer's are 1.5" and i did not have anything that big. Since then i have borrowed a 1.5" 1/2" drive socket and breaker bar - no good, 1/2" drive not enough beef. Yesterday I borrowed a 3/4" drive breaker and 1 1/2" socket and gave it another try last night. No good again! The socket is a 12 point and appears to slip when I put a lot of pressure on it (pipe extension on the breaker bar).

Are these really 1 1/2" nuts? Any suggestions on how to break them free?

I plan to sell or trade the trailer off for M715 parts but I would like to swap out the tires first.

BTW, these trailers are pretty cool: hand brakes on each wheel; spin on spare tire on the tongue; canopy frame with heavy rubber cover (needs patching) and military tail lights. This ones in pretty good shape too.

I thought the M101's used the M37's 5 lug rims?

Well, I am not going to swear I counted right but it sure looked like a 6 lug rim! I will check tonight.

Even if it is, the tires are 9.00 x 16" and about 35" tall (I measure when it was on my car hauler). I can't swap them out if I can't get them off the trailer.

Usually they would have the 5 bolt large Dodge Power Wagon type pattern with, yes, 1.5 inch lug nuts.

Sometimes, there is an adapter out there somewhere, there are 6 bolt wheels like the M715 uses with the same M715 type 1 inch lug nut.

The 900-16 tire is correct either way.

soak them with PB blast, then try some heat, put a pipe on the breaker bar [hi lift jack handle works good for this]

its posible that you have the "A2" axle with cucv gm wheels

could you post some pics of the spare tire mount?

ETA: missed that you already tried the pipe thing... soak them then repeat ... for a week and try again

Better get a 6 point socket to eliminate the slippage. Another option is to find a metric equivelant that is slightly smaller. Like how 13mm and 1/2 are real close as is 14mm and 9/16. One is slightly smaller then the other in both cases and the smaller one will allow a tighter fit to eliminate the slippage even if you have to "help" it onto the lugnuts with a hammer and then use a punch to get the removed nuts back out of the socket. Also, since this bolt pattern has some question as to what the axle really is, It may be possible that one side has reversed threads like some Dodge trucks did in the 60's, in which case, you are trying to remove the nuts by tightening them. Just a thought, Bill

I will take some pictures tonight and try to post on Thursday. You guys have me worried that I have reached the age I cannot count to 6 anymore! The spare tire attachment bolts to the front of the trailer over the tongue and has a 3 pronged spinner that holds the tire on. I will take pictures tonight.

I will check on the 6 point socket. I need to find a heavy equipment mechanic because none of the stores here have them (all 12 point).

I doubt he has the cucv rims. Most likely if the nuts are larger than 1" he has the M37 style rims. The tires will interchange. I agree with PB Blaster on them and then some heat. Have you tried an impact wrench? Also give them a tap with a BFH to get the blaster into the groves... The nuts not the threads!

FWIW, 38mm is 1.50" so you can take it from there....

My M101 trailer has the 5 lug m37 style rims, cant remember if one side is reverse threads or not.
