    Is a 1990 14 bolt a good axle?

I found a 1990 Suburban14 bolt for $100. Gears are wrong and it will need to be converted to disk brakes. Most info I have found on disk brakes cover earlier axles. Should I buy this one or look for an earlier/older 14 bolt?

if it's a full-floater, you're golden. If it's not, and coming out of a Suburban I suspect it's not, then I'd pass. I have a Suburban w/the semifloater 14bolt, and while it's a decent axle, it's not quite as heavy duty as the full floater.

You should have no trouble finding the full floater in earlier trucks, every 3/4t , pre88 GM truck I've seen has had one.

I'm not sure on that particular axle but you do need to watch for the semi-floating axles. The 14 bolt can be had in the light duty semi floating design (which I think has a smaller ring gear diameter) and the more heavy duty full floating 14 bolt. $100 is a really good deal on a full floating 14 bolt, but not such a good deal if it's the more worthless semi floating design.

EDIT: d**n, Tac, you beat me to it, but yeah, ditto.

Thanks for the info/help. I just found a 74 FF 14 bolt in a C30 1 ton bread truck. Don't know the axle ratio but for $50 bucks, I don't care! I have to pull it myself but I can have the springs, plates & rear driveshaft for free! The guy even has a backhoe to lift the van up and load it on my trailer.

Guess what I will be doing Friday evening?

Good score! Around here 14 bolts are between free and about $150, depending on condition and location LOL
