diff covers ? and gear oil ?
Post by warwick on May 25, 2006, 2:32pm

my covers were the same as the pictures in the manual

    front diff

    fill plug at the top

    rear diff

    fill plug in the middle

the manuals say to put 6.5 pints of oil in the rear with the plug in the middle i can only get 6 pints. also the oil is suposed to lube the hubs. however with plug in the middle the bottom of hole is at the bottom of the axles, and i dont see how oil gets out to the hubs.

    any thoughts or suggestions?

i think i remember reading something on the real zone a long time ago but can't rememeber what the senior members had to say

    thanks brian

I know that everytime I pull a rear axle to change a seal or work the bearings or to put on the block off plates when flat towing, I get about 1/2 cup of gear oil or a little more out of the housing...I remember Barrman saying the same thing...

jon, is your D70 fill plug in the middle? do you just fill to bottom of the hole? and not measure how much gear oil you used?

also when i pulled the rear hubs i got the same gear oil out about 1/2 cup or so

My rear cover is stock and I do measure the amounts...it is real close to the spec....least when I opened the fill plug and let it drain for a couple days....let it drip itself dry...my preferred method...

you know there is always that puddle inside it under the middle/back of the ring gear...unless you open the cover and drag that out, you dont get it all...could be the difference....

FILL IT to the top of the filler hole. then its right. better grease the wheel bearings to be safe. it sure cant hurt. use 85w-140 weight lube.

How does one fill it to the top without it running all over one?

Jack up one wheel and let it run into the axel tube. as long and you keep up with how much you put in it want over fill. Just make sure put the plug back in before letting it down. Been there.

Does the oil not migrate to the bearings with help from the spinning shaft and rotating parts? It works that way in every rear that lubes the wheel bearings from diff lube. Plus your differential will work for a surprisingly long time with even 1/2 the correct amount of oil inside. The only reason it is 6.5 pints is so it will run for years before breaking down or getting contaminated requiring you to change it out. The bigger the sump the longer it will last. The oil will naturally migrate anywhere there is no seal. Even more so if everythings rotating. Worrying over that last 1/2 pint is burning calories you don't need to burn. It will never know the difference.

Exactly - overthought to the max. If the bearings are new or otherwise degreased, lightly pack them with bearing grease to keep them lubed until the gear oil makes its way down there. After that, just keep the oil at the right level. I didn't even know people measured how much oil goes in.

In my case, I jacked one wheel to intentionally overfill my axle.
