    The Transformation continues....
    Post by binfordm715 on May 14, 2006, 12:10am

Well, looky what I found as I sanded the driver's door:

Got the gauge plate out of the dash and pulled all the gauges out. Two were new(ish) and had sort of that new flat olive color on the bezel. The other two were crappy. Turns out the Krylon "Camo" paint olive green is just about the same, so I sanded up the other two and shot them with that. Painted the 3 light caps and the plate 24052. Got a new speedometer coming from eBay. Glass is all scratched up on mine.

    Progress sure ain't pretty:

Front fender is looking good though:

Now THIS is interesting.... I was sanding off my glove box door and found this:

Ever seen that on the glove box door before? I'd heard it is commonly on the driver's side dash or sometimes on the driver's door. I have the remnants of one on my door too, just forward and above the window crank. Never heard of it being on the glove box door though. Hmmm.....

    The Transformation proceeds....

What would be really cool is to find the unit markings or numbers on the hood, etc!!!!

Already looked and found nothing. My last hope is something off the bumpers, but those are so deeply scratched, I'm not holding my breath!

Yeah you'll be surprised what you will find. With the good drivers I think it was up to the GI to place it in his truck. I think that is why you find them all over the place.

Thats rad dude.. sounds like your having a blast over there!!

I'd keep the sticker, sand and paint around it... i like the originality factor of it...

Yeah, you could see the remnants of the tire pressure markings on the left side of the glove box. I'm going to paint over that Good Driver sticker. I'm not going to sand it off. I'll always know it's still there though, and that will be cool enough. The replacement GD sticker will go on the driver's door where I found the remains of the original.

I also found faint painted "max speed" markings on the dash to the left of the steering wheel. Couldn't read what the max speed was, but I know it was there!

The area on the door where the star was is messed up. The forest service put a sticker over their painted-on markings then took a grinder to the sticker. Nicely done..... I'll get it in pretty good shape with some body filler. But it is a military truck, after all. A few blemishes will be nice reminders. A bit of history in every mark.

Mine has MAX SPEED 60MPH stenciled on the rail of the windshield frame that sticks out.

I have seen others that say 45 MPH in place of the 60...usually, but not always, on governor equipped trucks.

Yeah, I had (have, actually, since I haven't sanded the windshield yet) stickers there that read "MAX SPEED 30". I've always wondered who put those there--military or forest service. Seems 30 is a tad low.

Maybe they have seen you drive?

Never seen any quite that low either...does seem too low to me...unless one is strictly talking off road or low range or both...
