ok zoners, I know this has probably been asked before. What steering box and powersteering pump do I need to make this conversion? I'm doing a 383 stroker conversion at the same time, if that helps any. Thanks for any help you can send my way!

Best choice for the pump is the GM "canned ham" style pump.

The gear box is full size GM CAR box from early 70's at least up to the late 80's at least....also the ones used on Jeeps, Full Size rigs, from 74-91...same Saginaw box.

GM TRUCK boxes DO NOT work as they mount outside the frame.

I used a box from a '79 Jeep J-10 with a Chevy pump on my 350 - then changed the pump fitting to match the hose from the J-10.

compexp, did you have to have the hose custom made or just use some type of bushing?

Pretty much you should try to get the pump, hoses and box all at the sime time from the same vehilce. Using a FSJ as the source gets you the proper pitman arm. Using a Chevy car gets you the proper motor mounts for the pump but not the right pitman arm. It is up to you, but pump mounts for a SB are a lot easier to find later compared to the FSJ pitman arm. Either source get you hoses that will work.

I used the Jeep hoses and changed the pump adapter from chevy to jeep - they used the same pump. My engine was an '83.

Will the box, pump, and pitman from a wagoneer or grand wagoneer work? Have a small surplus of those at a local j'yard.

should if there's one around a '79 - mine was a '79 j-truck and everything bolted up, including the pitman arm.

you will have to change the pump mount to the one for your chevy motor, but the rest should work fine.

All the pumps and boxes and pittmans on the Full Size Jeeps, J series trucks, Wagoneers, Cherokees and Grand Wagoneers work from 74-91.

    Another take on the issue:
I used a pump, pulley, and bracket from http://www.krcpower.com/productCat99517.ctlg
I also got a set of adapters to change my steering gear-box hose fittings to AN-6. Now all my steering hoses (with exception of return) are AN-6. I can get spares at any hydraulic/farm/supply house, and carry a length of hose with reusable fittings as an emergency backup. All this connects to a PSC box I originally bought for a CJ-7.

I just put everything together on my 383 last weekend, if you want some pics/part numbers, would be happy to post-up.
