Thread: stock driveline and SBC 383 stroker ?

  1. #1

Default stock driveline and SBC 383 stroker ?

i've been tinkering with the stock tornado engine a bit, and have decided i want easier parts availability, and more power. i see chevy 350 crate motors are pretty affordable. but, the 383 chevy (400+ hp) really calls my name.
does the T98A trans and NP 200 case hold up well to the chevy V8s ?

The do...as long as your top speed is 50 mph or less...the transfer case doesnt like the higher speeds as it wasnt designed for higher...it was made for flat head motors goverened to aroud 2700-2800 rpm.

Swapping in an NP205, the updated version of the NP200 transfer case solves the top end problem and those t-cases came behind big block Chevys...plenty for what you are doing.

thanks for the info- how do you work the parking brake with a NP 205 swap then ? and, would selectable hubs on the front axle help with the NP 200 problems with higher RPMs ?

There are post about putting the parking brake on the 205. Selectable hubs makes the 715 much more driveable. But from what I've seen will not help with the transfer heating problem. If it does help its small.

The front hubs won't do anything for the transfer case at all, noise or heat. They will make it drive like you took the parking brake off. They really do eliminate that much drag on the truck.

Ditto...I have selectable hubs, 75W-90 synthetic lube and I moved the driveshaft from the riight to the left rear output...moving the driveshaft gets rid of the whine...none of these things gets rid of the temp problem.

The 200 is very strong. Just not up to long trips without heating up.
