    Default 2 speed transmission

Has anyone ever seen or own a "double-torque" 2 speed trans? There isnt much info on the net, but from what I have seen, the original company in Texas probably sold the design to Advanced Adapters and they modified it a little. I believe it is the original design of the Ranger overdrive unit.

I bought this unit at a swap meet in Iola for 20.00 . The Transmission was never used, but it was left outside for several years and when I bought it was locked up with rust and had never been filled with oil. I have since started to rebuild it with new bearings and have sanded the gears.

The trans has a cast iron case unlike the Ranger overdrive's aluminum one, and this one seems to have a 22% overdrive gear and a 1:1 gear. the Ranger is a 27% OD and 1:1 I believe both cases are about 7.5 inches long.

I would like to know some of the specs on how much torque and HP this box will take, since I will be testing the limits of it.

I am going to try to get this thing back together this weekend, and take some pictures of it. It does look identical to the Ranger unit though.

Dont have a clue on the hp/torqu capabilities...

I do wonder about the gears though...most gears, like say axle gears...are surface hardened...if rust or wear or whatever, gets through the thin surface hardening, then inner, and much softer, part of te gear is exposed and will wear much faster.

Dont know how you could check in your situaton but it could mean you are looking at a really short life for the gearbox down the road...

It is the original Ranger unit.
I have one of those as well.
The cast iron case is a bit stronger then the aluminum case, and there are guys out there with big blocks using these.
Downside? They make it harder on the clutch. The additional rotating mass means slower shifting, and more clutch wear.
The gears are almost the same as a T98 3rd and 4th gear.
If the rust is on TOP of the metal, you might be ok. But if it pits INTO the metal, then teh gears will most likely not last nearly as long (if at all, depending on how bad).
Think twice about sanding the rust off though, chemicals might be the better approach.

Oh yeah, call up AA and talk to them on the phone, they STILL sell parts for these. They bought all the rights and tooling for them, then made the newer aluminum one. I have talked to them a couple times about mine. They are usually more then helpful.
