So I was on a search the other day with Search and Rescue looking for some guy who got stuck in the snow with this Mercedes (yeah, a Mercedes). We don't think he was in his right mind, because when he called dispatch saying he was stuck and walking down the road, he wanted to "Talk to the President, please patch me through to the President...". Not sure why he was like that, maybe off his meds or something, idk. Turns out he was actually just on the other side of our county, but we still had to search the roads in our county untill he was found because we had reason to beleive he was in our county.
During the search I noticed my passenger side was sitting really low, like the bumpstop was almost touching the axle and I couldn't figure out why till I crawled underneath and discovered that the rear spring hanger broke off of the frame! Guess I was hitting some bumps and railing through the snow a little too hard. Appears to be just really shotty factory welds (40+ year old ones at that).
What little weld was there barely penetrated into the frame. I cleaned the frame, repositioned the hanger, and welded every inch I could, top, side, bottom, inside, I don't think its going to come off again.
Was a surprise, didn't think that would break. I welded on the other side too as well as the front hangers to strengthen them. Fun times.
