    Default Rear Main seal questions

    A while back a guy posted that the way to install a rear main (on say a 350 w/ the 2 part seal) is to clock it 90* and thus have the 2 halves meet in the center of the cap.

    Anyone heard of this? Was he cracked out? Is there truth to it?

    My 350 has a leaker. It seems to only leak when I'm driving it as I stuck it on the jackstands the other day and ran it at about 2000 RPM for 10 minutes and it didn't leak a drop. Do they only leak when the oil in the pan is shifted back against the rear seal?

    Any help is appreciated as I hate to do this wrong.....again.

    Brian,
    That is a Modified post. Seriously. Your seal is probably leaking only when you move the truck because the oil is being splashed against the seal/bearing cap mount and out. You will find many opinions on how much to clock it. The main thing is that unless you put some silicone type sealer between the seal ends, it will probably leak if it is not clocked. So clocking the seal even a little is theoretically just as good as your stated ninty degrees.

    Barrman, that was harsh. If I'd have posted in the Modified board then I got the feeling one of them would have said that it could be Stock of Modified and thus it belonged in the Open board.

    You make me so mad. Come to the BS board so I can call you names that are not allowed here.

    I clock them about 10* and put a small amout of sealant on the mating surfaces.


    This edit stuff is cool.......I read my post and realized I made a mistake and then corrected it.........I like this!!!

    Brian,
    You may have excessive crankcase pressure forcing the oil through the seal. I had this EXACT problem a few years back with an old jeepster. When the engine was installed after rebuild, the PCV valve plumbing was routed incorrectly. The mechanic changed the rear main seal 4 TIMES! It never leaked at idle or with revving in the garage, but when we got it on the road it leaked badly. He noticed the incorrect plumbing while pondering what to do. He simply moved a hose connection and that was it--no more leaking main seal. Amazing, but true. Good luck.
