Thread: Air cleaner question

    Default Air cleaner question

when did the air cleaner change from directly to the carb to the cylinder unit that bolts under the hood. my 67 has the carb type one, and didnt know if a certain year made the difference, or it was a bolt on after the fact for certain types of extreme conditons. is one any better than the other?

The hood mounted air cleaner was added to accomodate the governor which was added to keep PFC Soldier 2 from destroying the motor.

Seems to be more prevalent in older trucks although any truck might have it since they could be added during a depot rebuild or other maintenance.

The governor/hood mounted, canister, air cleaner started at VIN 28680 for M715's, 13577 for M725's and 10001 for M726's. This is roughly 8/68 or 9/68.

Not all the trucks after that VIN have the gov/hood mounted air cleaner though...so earlier numbers dont have it and some of the later do and some dont.
