What are the "must have" books that cover basic rebuilding, and also porting heads, etc. All my engine rebuilding knowhow is geared towards air cooled stuff.

I started reading his stuff when I was 14 and looking to make the Mini better. About the time I got into real vehicles, he wrote his "How to rebuild your small block chevy" book. I use it in my class anytime we do small block work because it is very precise, easy to read and covers all the first timers mistakes.
I have not read the other small block books, but would imagine they are just as good. If you read Hot Rod in the '80's, most small block modification articles that actually worked were written by him.
Remember if you didn't build it you can't call it yours.
