Do you by chance mean the Spicer 3053A 5 speed overdrive from a M35A2 truck? If you do, then you will find them cheaper to get, longer living and very stout. However, instead of the .72 OD of the NV4500, they only have a .85 I believe 5th gear.

I have a NV4500 in my M715 behind a 396 Big Block. It works good, but I have to baby it. The Spicer in my Duece doesn't get babied and is a lot older.

Why are you babying it??? how much torque is that 396 putting out?????????

I'll trade you another 3053A for that NV.

i have had big and small block trucks with the 4500 and never had any issues with them. just make sure you use the correct fluid. if your truck is already set up for the NV then i say stay with it. if you are set up for neither and deciding what to swap in, i say go for what is cheaper

3rd gear doesn't like to be shifted to very fast, 5th makes noises if I go into it below 1500 rpm and it just "feels" like it should not be pushed hard on.

I pulled it out of a '93 C30 where it was behind a 6.5. The 6.5 had a rod through the block, but the NV4500 had been replaced with a new factory unit about 10K miles before. I have changed out the fluid with the Syntorque fluid and have tried to be nice to it.

Now, I have to add that I have about 18,000 miles with the 396/NV4500 combination and most of those miles were driven fully loaded or with a loaded trailer attached to the truck. Along with lots of trails too.

A 3053 is nuclear bomb proof in a M-715, as long as you keep oil in it. A NV4500 shifting is a little more normal, as far as what most people are used to now. If you have driven any old trucks you will be right at home with a 3053 trans. There is a member who has a complete 3053 trans setup to a chevy engine for sale right now, or at least he did last time I checked.

I used the 3053 because I wanted all my trucks to have the same shift pattern(and the OD), then I picked up the 5ton wrecker and that went out the window real quick.

    3053A Ratios:

    1st 6.00
    2nd 3.31
    3rd 1.89
    4th 1.00
    5th 0.85
    Reverse 5.90

I have one that's about to go behind a 4bt in my 715.
