Thread: Power Steering question

  1. #1

    Default Power Steering question

I am running a 6bt so of course i have the cam driven power steering pump. I am also running a hydroboost brake set-up. The question is. Do you think i can still you a FSJ steering box? or should i use a 1ton dodge steering box and just fab it up to fit. The big question i have, are the steering boxes sensitive to pump pressure's? Or can you almost use any pump with any box? I have an 1ton dodge power steering pump and steering box to use as a core at Autozone. Just undecided as of now.

I "think" Dodge and GM run close to the same pressures. Some Ford stuff runs a little lower pressure.

You may be able to find spcs for the pump you have online somewhere. If it's in the 1100 PSI area you should be good to go.

i Just got a reply from the AGR guys. The pump that is said to go to the cummins motor is rated at 1500psi. He said he could change it to whatever pressure i needed. What ya think about that??

Also just got a reply from Elliott on the pump pressure needed for the Hydroboost brake set-up. He said 1500 as well. Looks like i will just match up an AGR steering gear for this pump as well.

I do just that, the stock Jeep boxes are in the 1100-1200 range IIRC, adding that much more may or not not have given you issues. Better to know you're covered.

You should be okay, depending on the vintage of your dodge motor, it may or may not have used hydroboost, . .earlier ones used a vacuum pump for the power brakes. The hydroboost will "steal" some of your pressure, so with that combination (hydroboost and FSJ box) I think you will be fine. In fact, depending on your tire size, a little extra pressure to move big tires could be an advantage, . .as long as you don't have so much pressure that you blow out lines or seals, or make your steering so light that it is hard to control. Most PS pumps have a pressure relief valve right in the back inline with the hose fitting, . .changing that out you can adjust your pressure. . ..

Yeah it is a 96 6bt out of a manual so you get the 215pump. One of the best years for the cummins. I have the stock mounting plate for the cummins steering box, i may see how i can weld that up to the frame. If it's not to bad i am just going to run and AGR steering box with it. Running 41x13x20 tires, so i am gonna need some help in the steering department.

I have a 1990 Dodge W-350 donor truck that I am pulling the 6bt out of to put into mine. (currently mine has a 292 chevy I-6) Do you have any pictures and pointer you could share with me for planning purposes on doing this? I have the complete dodge truck, so plan on axles and all moving, . .not absolute on trans/tranfer yet. I am working on that, I have the stock 5-speed and married 205, also have a divorced 205, . and a possibility on a fuller 10-speed, . .so in the planning and and collecting stage at this point, . .. probably start actual work in the spring, . .I would appreciate your ideas. . .

I will have alot of pictures when i get back in December to work on the kaiser. One thing that rear Dana70 will not work. I had one i was going to try and use. They are WAY too short, you would have to mount the spring perches on the brake drums. I am currently working with Valeo Clutch to get the correct clutch/flywheel for my set-up. I am told the clutch/flywheel from a mid 90's freightliner FL70 with the 5.9/5 speed eaton will work. The Hydroboost cam from elliott on this site, new mounts can come from newdodgeparts.com, the steering gear and pump will come from autozone, When i get back in december i will document what i am doing, and should have a clear direction that you can follow if needed.
