Thread: Bolt on D-ring tabs

    Default Bolt on D-ring tabs

Does anyone have any experience with bolt on D-ring tabs? Good , bad, or whatever. I stumbled across them while shopping for weld on tabs and was just curious about these. I hadn't seen any for small stuff, we've got them on all of our big equipment at work, so I guess they would work.

I've used them, but they are only as good as the bolts and the surface they are bolted to.

DO NOT use stainless bolts to secure them. Stainless bolts are brittle and will break. Grade 8 is about the best I have found.

Also don't bolt them to anything thinner than the bracket that secures them or they will bend and break it when you need it most.

    Thanks for the input.

You do bring up a good point about the SS hardware that a lot of people don't think about. We had a misshap in the shop a while back involving SS bolts the were used in the wrong way and sheared.

It helps alot to make up a backing plate to reinforce the mount area. A piece of channel or angle stock with the same bolt pattern placed behind the piece your mounting to. It also helps to make that back up piece larger than your front mounted bracket.
    I hope this helps some.

I prefer the weld on tabs, but have the bolt on ones all over my gooseneck trailer, courtesy of the PO. They work okay.

I think the bolt on ones are OK for securing a load, but for recovery, I'd go the weld on route for safety and reliability.
