My Ears, The Noise is Back.

My truck has had a squeek in the rear for years. I can't hear it with the hard top on and barely hear it with no top at all. But, with the bikini top I really hear it at all speeds. I used to have a short, fat good for nothing student who could only do one thing right. I would give him a grease gun and tell him to "fix the squeek." He would. It would come back about 6 months later and I would give him the grease gun and tell him to get rid of it again. I didn't watch him after the first time which was at least 3 years ago. Now he is gone and the noise is back. I can't remember what he did to fix it either.

I introduced two students to the M715 this morning. I pushed up and down on the rear bumperette to demonstrate the noise, showed them all the Zerk fittings and gave them a grease gun with instructions to get rid of the noise. An hour later and they had put grease just about everywhere it was supposed to be and a few places it wasn't. The noise was still not fixed though. Both of the main pins for the rear spring schackles would not take grease. We removed the Zerks, cleaned everything up and still no grease would travel. I told them never mind since I didn't want to pull the shackles off today. One of them got the idea of seeing if the nuts would even turn so they could be removed. I told him to go ahead.

I had other students to watch and walked away. My two grease guys started making a lot of noise and I just knew they had somehow broken my shackle off. I went back over there and they were all happy.

Once you remove the nut and washer from the main shackle pin, smear some grease on there and put it back together. No more noises of any kind will come from the back of the truck.

Just thought some of you might hate little noises as much as me and would like a simple temporary fix. But, be warned that the next set of new shackles I see on E-bay will be persued by me, so please don't drive the price up. Either that or Pistolnuts truck will have a lot of odd noises in it when it leaves while mine is nice and quiet. (Just kidding Clint)

What? Is the lifting shackle on the rear end that was making a noise? I'm confused, maybe cause its almost 2300 here and I'm dead tired tonight...

I think he's talking about the leaf spring shackle.

Yes, the rear spring shackle for the rear leaf springs. This shackle has two bolts or studs in it. The lower one is fixed to the frame and the upper one is where the spring is attached to the shackle. The lower stud is what we smeared grease on to stop the noise.

could you find a thin teflon washer to put between the two (under/behind the washer)to stop the squeak?

That would work Mark. Along with taking it apart and cleaning the gunk out so the grease will go where it is supposed to from the Zerk.

You don't have that set up with your axles do you?

I still have stock springs, but I have lift blocks on the rear along with reversed rear-rear shackle and SOA, I want to remove those blocks, still working on what to put there...

Put some heat on it, then grease it. Softens up the dried up crud so you can push it out with new grease. Doesn't hurt to have one person keeping pressure on the grease gun while another applies the heat.

The other day Nick wanted to search out zerks on the M715 as we'd done recently on the CJ-5. He tried pumping the grease gun on the rear shackle zerk, but couldn't get it to pump. So I gave it a couple/three good pumps. Really tough though. So then he goes to take the hose off the zerk and it won't come off. So I try. Tough bugger, but I finally gave it a good yank and....

SPLAT!!!



There's red grease blown everywhere!

Funny, but I've never had that happen. I figured the grease in there was all cruddy and dried up, but figured some got in and not that it had all just built up in the grease hose! Heh, heh, heh.....

Hey, speaking of noises....

My steering wheel is squeaking like crazy any time I turn it. Driving me nuts. I blasted some Kroil down around the collar, but it looks like I'm going to have to pull the steering wheel to get to it.

Anyone have this before and discover a quick trick to solve it? Too bad I don't have a classroom full of students to put to the task! Heh, heh, heh....
