Thread: 715 headlight problems

    Default 715 headlight problems

I have a '67 715 in which the headlights will only stay on for 3 minutes. Then what I would call a breaker heats up, cuts the power, and the headlights go out. After a few mintues the headlights will work again. Does anyone know where I can find this breaker to replace it with a fuse and how it can be identified where it's at? Or is it some other problem? I don't want to think it's the wiring harness.

Good timing - I just wrote a bit on how to rebuild one of those switches!

In short, take the switch apart, and sand the contacts of the breaker clean. If you're using 12V lights, or oversize bulbs, you can replace it with a larger breaker...

replace the 3-lever switch. The circuit breaker is inside the switch.

I only skimmed the rebuild article for now I will go through it later how'd it seems to confirm there's an internal circuit breaker and that is been popping and resetting on mine once it's been driven for a while at night thanks guys

Did you put any more bulbs into the circuit, maybe some halogen lamps? Excess current draw can open the breaker. It is just doing its job if so.

I had a 3 lever switch do something similar...the time frame varied from a few seconds to maybe not at all that time...i replaced the switch and took it apart to find the metal bar that is the inside of the unlock lever had come loose and would wiggle itself into touching other things in the box and cause a short.
once changed, poof...all was good...hope yours is just as easy!

I have the same problem with the internal breaker tripping. LED headlights will give both better lighting and lower current draws, fixing two problems in one shot
