Default Stock gears in later model axles?

Just sold a transmission I won't be using and the buyer and I were talking about my truck, mentioned I'll be swapping the ring and pinion gears and he said he might be interested in my old gears for a rock crawler he has sitting in his barn.
I know our stock axles are different from newer ones but don't know how different. If he found the right carriers could he put a set of our 5.87s in newer housings?

In all the axle discussions I've read on here I don't think that has ever come up.

The ring gear on ours needs a spacer to work on the newer ones...I remember that coming up several times before...the offset is different...

    Heres some info on this:

Well crap. Read that and realized the R&P set I was planning on buying from nolfy won't work on the rear. The one he has is the .625 offset.

    Hmmm....
