Thread: Rear axle shot

    Unhappy Rear axle shot

When I pulled the drain plug on the rear axle to start the process of replacing the leaking cover gasket, I noticed that there was A LOT of metallic goo on the magnet and a couple of chunks. No immediate signs of where it came from.

Tonight I had a chance to look at it more and I found that the pinion gear is totally shot. It has big chunks out of it. Strange cause the ring gear is fine. What could cause this? Will try to get some pics when I can get back out there and its not dark.

Now I am trying to decide what to do from here. Rebuild the stock axle? Get a spare someone has pulled, run it as is and then rebuild the current when I have time & funds? Do a swap to a modern D70? If I rebuild, should I do a gear ratio change?

    Such a bummer.

Trenton, My gear guy is pretty reasonable and he has my stock gears on his shelf. Bet you can get the whole job done for cheap. Just a thought.

Least expensive option would be to pick up someone's takeout. D70 would be my choice. Or since you'll have to change both axles if you do that maybe buy a set from Gubni(?) on the for sale board. Allready have a rear locker and 4.56 gears. Those won't be just a weekend project though.

That is a good alternative. I will give you a call to discuss.

if you dont rebuild yours, I would get a pullout, they cant be worth much since everyone complains about them, and ends up swapping them out. LOL

What is your Vin...basically, is yours an earlier truck?

The reason I ask is that...weird as it seems...early trucks (unknown how many like so many other things about these trucks) had a coil spring type thing on the pinion instad of the usual shim setup. This has come up due to a few members in the past tearing into the rear axle and changing gears or investigating howling noises or other problems. I know a guy who found at least 2 different ones this way. He talked to a motor pool veteran in the early 90's and was told that there were these strange setups, they caused problems in service, the militarys equivalent of a recall was done and all of the so equipped trucks were supposed to be refitted with the normal shim type setup.

Obviously some were missed...about a half dozen I know for sure...maybe one more now?

Farly early...not sure if it is early enough or not...if you can tear it down and find out, it would be interesting...

#2523 of around 30,000...seems early to me...

Quote for re-gear from Randy's is about $1300 on the cheap side. Not really an option. For that much would rather find a set of modern D60/D70 to swap in.

Still waiting to see if Saxon's gear guy still has the old gears. He is looking but is not sure.
