I am going to replace the seals on the "new" NP205. Is it necessary to use gaskets for the bearing retainers or can you use permatex? Does the gasket effect the bearing load in anyway?
Gaskets have to be ordered so would rather not have to do that if its not necessary.

yes, the correct gaskets are a certain thickness and the bearings have a snap ring that has a machined groove on the retainer. all of that is done with the gasket in mind. that being said, i have done it without gaskets before, you just have to be carefull not to snap the ears off the retainers. IMO gaskest are a good thing. also sometimes the parts wharehouse gaskets are just generic paper gaskets, and they are the wrong thickness. the real stuff from the dealer or from syracuse will be thicker.

I would use the gaskets. My 465/205 was gone through and cleaned up and re assembled by my brother. I don't think he used gaskets and EVERYTHING seeps a little gear oil. It's gonna be a pita now to fix something simple like that.

But then I think you've met my brother already.
I used RTV on my NP200 about a year ago. No problems and no leaks.
RTV all of my 205's in my Jeeps, works fine. Just read the instructions on the tube. Some want you to let it sit for a few minutes before you bolt it down tight.
I ordered up gaskets to be on the safe side.
