hi guys, i am new around here so please be gentle. i just bought a m715 and i need to get it home to indiana from arizona. my dad volunteered to go get it with a trailer and a f150, but i don't think that he should try to pull a 715 with a 1/2 ton truck. my question for u guys that haul your trucks is, do you think this is doable or should i just pay a transporter to bring it home??
What is the towing capacity on your F150? I would use a 3/4 truck at least. But some of the newer 1/2 tons can tow quite a load. M715 weight is about 5500-6000 lb. You need a trailer that is capable of hauling that weight with trailer brakes (either surge or electric).
Road trips are fun. Just got back from picking up a m724 in Missouri using a F250 with a rented 8k trailer.
For that long of a trip, a transporter may be able to do it cheaper than you can (his trip is one-way while you pay for gas round-trip).
On the other hand, nothing beats a road trip to get your truck.
Hello, I towed mine home behind my 93 f150,(302 auto) and 20' car trlr W/brakes. I loaded it backwards and put the windsheild down. I was worried how it would handle and was quite supprised how well it went. 70mph on the interstate and one hand on the wheel. granted it pulled down on some long grades but not bad, go for it.
i pulled one home from florida with my 1972 chevy 1/2 ton and a 250 cu 6 cyl on a u-haul car trailer. did just fine.

Surge brakes are evil. Electric brakes are your friend.
Watch your tongue weight and make sure it's correct. Better to be too heavy than too light.
My 715 without winch weighs in at 5,500 lbs with an AMC 360. (Dunno if it's any heavier than the stock motor...)
I agree--as long as your trailer has brakes (preferably electric), you should be okay.
Expect 5500-6000# for the truck plus 2000-2500# for the trailer. Make sure your hitch is up to the task.
I used a military towbar to pull mine from Ohio to Tn. last summer. M725 behind a 98 half ton GMC. Got up to 80 a couple times.

you should have no problems as long as you don't drive like you're in NASCAR, a wide uhaul trailer will hold a stock 715 no problem ( take some kind of extra tie down, the stock straps won't reach over the tires, ask for the wider Uhaul car hauler, tell them it's a 1967 CJ-7 with oversized tires, NOT A 715), they don't know what a 715 is, so if you say it, they won't rent the trailer to you. take it slow and easy(55-60) and You'll have no problems, except for slow up-hills...
I agree, I used the newer/wider uhaul trailer. There was not a lot of room to spare, but it did fit. I told uhual I was bringing home a 67 Impala. As 40grit mentioned stock attached straps would not fit over tires. I put a lot of tie downs on mine, and for the first several miles checked them frequently. M715 truck was probably over the weight limit for the trailer, but I was impress with how well the trailer worked for a several hour tow. I towed it home with a 3/4 ton Dodge quad cab pickup. I keep the speed pretty reasonable.

The fastest my 715 has ever been was on a trailer. The speedo in my Superduty read 100. Pulled like a dream and was very stable. I did not sustain that speed for very long, just maybe 10 miles or so, but it did it. (back story) We were heading somewhere with a group of vehicles all pulling vehicles on trailers. Well I have a complex where I must always be the lead vehicle in a convoy and the others thought it would be funny to try and ditch me at an exit ramp. They radioed that we were to get off at an exit for fuel but they stayed on the hiway. I came down the ramp with my foot to the floor and never lifted until we caught them. They said all they could see was a flash of silver and green go by. It all started becuase they were having troubles keeping up at posted hiway speeds of 70.

i've loaded with both with large (40") tires and small street tires. only the wheelbase fits on and i'm sure there's a legal limit as to how much can hang past the tail lights so be aware. when the straps can't cover large tires, i use them over the axle itself. btw, i never tie the truck down, just the axles.
you have to get creative about the fenders, deflate your M tires to spread the weight around and use 4wd to gently drive over them. use a plank for the center section of the fender. any bends are minimal and typically less then what they already have. if not, just bang them out. one of the fenders folds out but the watch the remaining aluminum plate.
best advice i can give is trailer tongue weight. amazing how important that is. last trip to utah was squirrely, but on the way back, i added just 160 lbs worth of tire/tools/jack on the trailer neck and it became very well mannered. obviously, keep the trailer weight down and load what you can in the tow rig.
finally, i've used a 1/2 ton dodge which worked great. sure, a 3/4 or 1 ton is ideal, but i have felt safe with the dodge shown, even through mountain passes. i'm sure the long wheelbase helps.

I towed my 68 M-715 home behind my 06 Tundra V8. Had a twenty foot equipment trailer 2500 lbs with electic brakes. The M-715 is minus engine, winch, bumper, etc. I towed on interstate and single lane mountain roads. A half ton truck will tow it fine if the trailer has electric brakes. Just remember it takes longer to get started and STOP. Your half ton will also be working harder to tow this load than a three quarter or one ton so on long uphill grades you might need to stop to cool down. On down hills you will need to use transmission to control speed and not just depend on brakes. Also because your half ton will be working harder make sure cooling system, brakes, driveline u-joints, rearend, and automatic transmissions are in good working order. Do a through pretrip inspection or have your mechanic do it. It could save you a big tow/repair bill on the road. Nothing beats a good road trip to drag some cool "junk" home. I'm jealous.
Couldn't agree more. I had several trailers available to me, but I didn't feel safe with the weight and the width of this monster so I had Mot Man hire out of a friend of mine and we all went down on a Sunday morning to snatch it up. Nice safe, trip, no issues and it only cost a little extra money.Quote:

ok, i have another question now since i have to get an auto carrier, i have been telling them that i am wanting to transport a 67 jeep truck for quoting purposes, how much larger is a m715 than say a gladiator, because if i tell em m715 they either won't know what i am talking about or quote me a price that is through the roof. any tips? thanks
I had my M715 transported from Oregon to New York. Yes it cost a good penny, but it was worth it. The main concern the carrier I used was the height and weight. Most auto carriers use a typicle car carrier you see on the road, so height is a restriction. They shipped the truck on a three car carrier with a fullsize tractor.
