230 Camshaft Wear and Repair

The camshaft bearing bores, and the camshaft bearing journals measure out great, with no wear on my 230:)

But, #1 and #3 cylinder cam lobes are worn slightly.
#1 is worn in about .010"
A few vendors advertise camshafts for the 230, but I didn't find any in stock.
My best option that I have found, is to send Kanter Automotive my core and they will repair it in about 12-15 days for $225.

As discussed in another thread, there are trade offs to modifying the oiling system. But I wonder if cross drilling the rear cam journal so that the oil could enter the lobe oiling passage at every 180 degress instead of once every revolution of the camshaft.

Increase oil supply will do everything you need in this area and if i was you i,d send my cam to isky, they specialize in cams and have done so for nearly 75 yrs. they do superb work. also the rocker arms on the bad lobes needs to be replaced. jmo

If you decide to try this modification, I would be really interested in the results. I have the "newest" Tornado that I'm aware of because it was built almost entirely out of NOS parts 10 years ago, including a brand new block, so anything that will help give it a long life is worth it for me.

a guy I know has a n.o.s. 230 in the crate. I,ve been trying to buy it for a couple years now. 100% complete engine. I offered him 3k for it and he refused !

And I know who that person is ... and I have seen the engine ... in the crate. Unfortunately, I suspect it will stay there.

I doubt it's NOS, most likely a depot rebuild. What color is the valve cover and the alternator if you've seen it?

its still in the sealed crate. its not a rebuilt engine. it doesnt have a alternator but it does have the starter. the fella had 3 at one time and has kept this one for himself.

Not another one of those guys!! I know several who have stuff like this. The one guy in northeast PA has three 45' trailers of '715 parts as well as three 715's sitting in the woods. He is 75, in a wheelchair and won't sell anything because he says "when I get better, I'll fix those trucks up and I may need the parts". I know people in the radio business with the same theory.

Then, they pass away and the family calls the junk man.

I know a guy who has a stack of winches over head high in a storage locker along with all sorts of truck surplus packed to capacity and won't sell any of it. People like that must get some kind of perverted thrill by depriving the others from having what they need.

Its VERY common. I could write volumes.

I was expecting a two week turnaround on getting my camshaft renewed, when this came in the mail today from Kanter Auto Products.
I'm not sure if it is an old regrind by Melling, or it is an old NORS from Melling.
Either way, it specs out good.
Gotta love the old weathered box with USA printed on it.
