what are the winches rated at on m715's. and how much do they actually pull...
7500lbs rated with maybe 140 feet of cable out.
ive pulled a m715 mired to the frame with only about 20 feet of cable out
i pulled my truck with about 100 ft out though 50 ft of snow about 2-3 ft deep
So maybe I don't have to get a 12,000 lb winch after all??? When I hit the lottery, I was thinking of a Milemarker hydraulic unit. Since I have TBI, the engine is reliable now, so I'm not worried about winching when the motor is dead. Besides that's what buddies are for. <g>
so i will have no trouble getting out of a stuck. thanks i was just wondering, the winch is @#$! huge...
I debated the electric vs hydo winch for a while. I went with the electric because I've seen people crossing "streams" that were really rivers. With a Hydro winch they are SOL when the engine dies, at least with the electric they can get dry.....
I didn't think the electrics were spec'd to be used underwater. I agree that it would be nice to have a winch if the motor was dead.
Yeah, but how far will a battery alone winch a vehicle??
not far.
That is why I put two of the biggest batteries I could buy in mine, might go to three. Sure makes cranking that little Chevy easy! So far I have always been able to fire right up after winching with the engine off. I used welding cables for battery cables. Mine is a Warn M-10,000
I will add my experiance...
I have owned a Warn 12K Electric industrial winch for over 12 years...in that time I have probably winched with it over a 100 miles (sure seems like it) it DOES work under water..(quite frequantly) it WILL pull my Bronco quite some distance with two huge lead acid HD Interstate batteries (easily out of a stream as an example) and it's plenty tough. It is also as small as I would go on a M-715 (at least if you get into mud), mine being mounted for most of those years on a 78 Bronco...it was always enough winch but a few times I was wondering...
Milemarker HYD units are "ok" but when used hard and a lot, they seem to end up a bit short of durable in my experiance with them...(based on a few friends that own them and have suffered failures when they needed them the most)
REAL hyd winches like the Ramsey as an example are VERY tough...but to be happy they need a fair sized fluid resivour and proper plumbing of the valves/filter/cooler.
My new trail rig will be sporting a transfer case driven 20K+ PTO shafted/250' of cable winch mid mounted...it's a smidge heavy but it should prove rather durable;-) And besides a 3spd winch makes for some great line speeds and awesome control with an automatic transmission.
NoRM
NoRM, I've got a deuce winch under the back of my truck running of the NP205 behind my 3053A five speed. You are correct...and you should see it fling the line in in 5th gear overdrive!
Spicer, what's the OD ratio in your 3053A? 0.85?
Thanks,
Mikel
Yeah, it's 15% over. Not huge, but better and 1:1. The multifuel wouldn't have pulled a much taller OD with any kind of load. Were I to have 4.88's, I'd seriously look into running the 3052 NON overdrive deuce trans and have the gears closer together. I think that would work pretty slick.
