Anyone tried a YJ wiper conversion?

I have seen the writeup and pictures of a CJ wiper conversion on a M715. I know they are considered an "upgrade" but CJ wipers are pretty crappy as wipers go and replacement blades and arms can be hard to find. Many CJ guys use YJ tubs and windshield to replace their rusted out CJ parts because they are so close to stock and are more readily available.

Soooo.... how about YJ wipers? CJ and YJ wipers parts are not interchangeable and the linkage goes back and forth on a CJ versus circular on a YJ. However, linkage is very close, they mount similarly to the windshield frame, and the arms are close to the same length. Pretty sure the hole through the windshield is slightly larger on a YJ and 2 speed motors are 4 wire rather than 3 but the 4th wire is just a ground. I measured a YJ windshield frame I have last night and the YJ wiper holes are 22.5" apart versus 23" in the M715. All of this leads me to believe they may be a candidate for our trucks but I have not tried it. Has anyone adapt them to a M715 windshield?

I know it has been done...Drew...aka Mud'og here on the site has done it...it is listed on his page, but no real details I can see.

I know he posted about it here in the past...might have been lost or might be in the archives...I dont think it woud be on this current board...

He has gone by mudog, drew715, mud'og...might have been another variant...I would try the old m715zone.com archive and the old yaho achives linked at the bottom of the Online Maintenance Manuals page.

I built a set (just have to shorten the section arm). but right after I painted it and before I installed it I lost the darn plastic nuts that held them on.

Guess I need to get a set of those now.

Fast forward to now.......

I did the YJ wiper conversion on Grantshire's truck. Well, actually on the windshield frame I'll be installing shortly. In doing so, I found it a lot easier to weld the original passenger side wiper arm hole shut and redrill it in the proper place. This way there is no mod to the linkage and replacement parts are an off-the shelf affair. I did also weld the brackets I made for the motor to the windshield frame so you can easily bolt and unbolt the motor if it ever needs replacement. It fits very well, works very well, and the motor does not hang down to interfere with the field of vision. Plus, you can now get wiper arms too.

Once I am finished with this one I will be doing mine the same way.

And hopefully you'll document it for the rest of us boneheads. Who doesn't want better wipers?

I'm finding this amusing that other guys are using this setup. They only reason I tried it was because we were stripping a YJ for a competition and it was sitting next to the truck.

The wiper setup sat on the floor for a while and I'd walk by it daily when working on one of the trucks.

One day we were like.. Hey that might work for wipers and mocked it up. Just pure chance, no real thought behind it other than the parts were lying around.

I'm quite fond of the funkadelic vacuum relics. It would be nice to see though...

Randy, I currently have a windshield frame off that I'm goint to refurbish and repaint. Now would be a great time to do the electric wipers. Can you post some pics or some more details? I'm guessing if I go pull the entire get up off a YJ it would become clear what needs to be done.

So, how are you dealing with the wiper park switch stopping the wipers in front of your field of vision? That is why I went with the CJ stuff more than anything. I had a YJ motor laying around too, but the park switch on those won't stop the wipers until it gets in that park position which is right in front of your face. A CJ motor allows you to stop the wipers anywhere you want.

That extra wire is for the park switch. It provides power to the motor after the wiper switch is shut off to allow the motor to continue to move until it finds the park switch. Maybe if you cut that wire out, it would work like a CJ motor.
Also, the CJ wipers are two speed, so there is no difference between the CJ and YJ as far as more options.

The CJ wiper control switch is also much better to use for the flat dash of the M715, since it is used in the flat CJ dash. The YJ switch is the type that is on the little stick on the side of the steering wheel. I suppose you can use a three position toggle switch that would allow you to keep the two speeds.

No sweat, I'll probably have to wait a while for the cowl seal anyway.

Does anyone have pictures of the completed YJ wiper install? Randy, do you have any shots of the bracket that you welded?

I have seen in quadratec custom Yj wiper arms that are angled so when they park they sit in almost perfect horizontal position.

Not sure who ever invented vacuum run wipers, but my guess is he lived and worked in the desert! My truck is not a daily driver, so mine are disconnected and I move them by hand. That's my version of intermitent wipers.

I use RainX. I don't usually need wipers as long as I'm moving...

I'm still running vacuum wipers and I needed new wiper arms and blades to pass inspection. ANCO 41-01 arms and ANCO 31-12 blades are the only off-the-shelf new arms I could find that will fit. NAPA sells Trico and they have discontinued the older wiper arm part numbers that are referenced elsewhere on this site.

I had to scrape all the red paint off the motor mount hubs to get them to fit correctly. And, after looking at some of the pictures on this site, I noticed that I need to get a vacuum line "Y" OR "T" connector to put in my Vacuum line before my first wiper motor to feed the second wiper motor. My second wiper is currently fed off the driver's side front/left hose adapter and they work goofy in this configuration.

I have some detailed pics on my conversion to CJ7 wipers. I shortened new CJ7 wiper arms 2" to fit CJ7 11" wiper blades.

actually, my name is Tim. you are welcome. I wanted to post some pics that showed how the motor is mounted. I don't know about YJ's but the wiper spacing on a CJ is 23" and an M715 is 22.5" I relocated the hole over by 1/2".

Cool. thanks Tim. I'll be getting in the garage tomorrow with a tape measure and the YJ linkage to see what I have to do the make it work.

I finally go around to putting wipers on. I bought a YJ motor and linkage over the winter. I mounted the linkage first. I welded up the passenger side hole, then redrilled both sides with a 7/8" hole saw. I ised a file to cut the keyway slots in the holes. The center to center of the wiper posts was about 22-7/8"

the distance from the center of the passenger wiper post, to the center of the motor output was approx 9-1/4"

I still need to run the wires and buy a switch, but I tested them, and the cycle well.

I dont remember the year of the motor I used, but the white wire was low speed, blue-high speed, black-ground

If you use YJ wiper arms, you will need to modify them to clear the edge of the windshield and clear enough of a field of vision. When I did them on Grantshire's truck I had to do that.

I was noticing that Randy. Did you shorten them, or bend them?

I cut a small "pie wedge" out of the arms, then bent them and re-welded them after I figured the correct angle. It also ended up having them up completely out of your field of vision when they are parked.
