I ordered the Civilian distributor for the 230 Napa Part number NRD 48-1646 and I'm having trouble finding the cap and rotor for it. The listed cap in the master parts list is way too small for the distributor and unfortunatly it is also the same part number that is listed in the Napa computers for a 65 jeep gladiator with the 230. Has anyone else done this? What am I missing here? Does the cap somehow fit on the Dist? Does anyone have some some other part numbers for caps and rotors?
I buy my caps for the stock distributor at Napa, for that application...wonder what you got a distributor for...the stock cap on the civvy dist is pretty small...I see I dont have the part number for the cap, but I walk in NAPA and ask for cap rotor point condensor for the 65 Gladiator 230 engine.
Heres a couple pics of the distrib in my truck with the cap on...this is the only kind I have ever seen for the civvy setup...the mil setup is completely different but the cap is about the same size with the arm for the coil sticking out...The 2nd pics gives you the underneath view of the dist so you can compare to whatever you got from NAPA.

Just Curious, when you say you ordered the "Civilian distributor for the 230" what vehicle was it for? (not the J20/Gladiator?)
Has anyone every converted the 230 Tornado to HEI? It works well on the 194/230/250/294 GM engines.
Cutworm made a hei distrib for a 230...worked well he said....

Yep its the distibutor for the 65 gladiator witha a 230 and it dont look like that. Granted that I am only going by what has been told to me from NAPA and the parts manual on this site. It does have the flat tip on the end of the distributor. I'm heading back to Napa Tommorow to check it out. These are the same part numbers that are in the online parts manual. What is the part number for your Distributor??? Now to me it looks like the cap was the right one but I got the wrong ditributor.
I believe that distributor is no longer produced. I'm pretty sure I've heard that on here before.

It seems I remember someone got a dist from Napa a year or 2 ago that was supposed to be for the 230 but turned out to be for the 226 I think...
Mine shows part number:
IAT-4411 4AT
This is the Prestolite number from the tag on the unit.

This is the distributor that I got from napa that is supposed to be for the 230. It is alos the same NAPA part number taht is listed in the parts guide. The cap and rotor are RR183 and RR182R. I hav'nt pulled my stock one yet because I know that it works and its been raining here lately. By the looks of it I don't think it will work. I may have to go junkyard hopping.... I dont know how to post pictures so I will email to Brute.
OK, I figuered out that the distributor is the wrong one, and I cant get the right one because nobody has one. All of the part numbers have been discontinued and none of the local part stores can get one. None of the junkyards around here have it either. So if anybody has a 12 volt 230 distributor hanging around because they swapped thier engine let me know because I'm looking for one. Or if anyone can point me in the right direction please do. Thank you.
The big HEI cap won't fit unless you switch to civvi fuel pump, the bigger mil pump interferes with HEI fitting, I was told.
now that i have a digi camera i'll take some pics of my military dist with civy wires.

I was at NAPA today and did a little checking on the 230 distrib they list....turns out it fits the 199, 232, and 258 motors and for some reason they also have the 230 listed along with those motors...I informed them that this is wrong but I dont think they really cared too much...The guy also looked up Kaiser Jeep and there were no parts listings for a distrib under that...they actually listed Kaiser Jeep as seperate from Jeep for the same years...weird....

OK I let my fingers do the walking and I found a civie dist for only $300 plus a core from surplus city jeep parts. Memphis Equipment makes a HEI dist unit by putting the stock shaft ona a new dist for only $497. The Jeepster Man Inc has the civy Dist for $175 + $75 for a core. So I think that I will just spen the $60 to $75 dollers to get a drop in 12V coil and be happy with that. I'm only doing it until I drop in another engine. So what do you guys think??
I think those prices are outrageous. I picked up a used distributor off Ebay for 35 bucks. They are out there if you have the patience. You don't need anything new or fancy just to get you by if you know you're swapping anyhow. I also grabbed a new 12v starter from Ebay for about the same price as the distributor.

kalikraven,Ihad good luck running a salvage yard search with various on line searches nationwide.happened to find one in the next state and drove over and pulled it myself,paid $40.00 for I it and also scored a cherry complete grille and radiator support from a 65 gladiator with lights and wiring for another $50.00! keep looking they're out there...KIRK
I found a civvy motor and pulled the distributor and 2 barrel carb and intake off it...actually bought the motor as a spare but have only needed a few small parts from it other than the dist and carb/intake.
I agree, those prices are fantasticly over the top...I paid $200 for my spare motor as it was a good running engine that I had actually been doing the maintenance on for a while...carb was rebuilt the year before...and I got all the parts from there...I would look around and see what you can find....I am shocked by those prices...absolute robbery it seems to me.

Kalikraven sent me a pic of the distributor NAPA is selling that is the WRONG one...they list it for the 230 engine, but this is the 199/232/258 engines distributor, NOT THE 230's. NAPA also lists it under the correct engines. NAPA part number is NRD481646.

I have used the Internet parts search on several occasions. You pay $5.95 I believe and they go out to the world. I got a civvie distributor from a salvage yard in ND for $75.00 plus shipping. Unit is used but servicable. Good luck.
I have ordered a 12V drop in coil to convert my system over. While playing with the stock distributor I have taken it apart completely to clean it up. There is not much too it. I have heard a rumor somewhere on this board tath the stock distributor has no vacume or mechanical advance, well they are wrong. It has a mechanical advance. I will take pictures of it and post them if anyone is inteerested and if somebody can tell me how to post pictures. Thank you for all your help guys.
Yes it has mechanical advance weights...the vacuum setup is missing on the mil setup though and with it you get better performance when taking off the line, more advance at speed for better power and fuel economy....(oxymoron??)...and in my case, it seemed to get smoother across the whole rpm band.

I have a civilian distributor I'd be willing to part with, the shaft is tight in good shape,but needs a new vacume advance and distributor cap and rotor, Need a civilian two barrel to go along with the distributor? Let me know. i was going to do the same thing but decided to swap in a buick 350 from a 69 J-3000 instead. Fisherman todd&lara@juno.com is me e-mail
And in case anyone is wondering, the vacuum advance unit can still be found NEW...I replaced the one on my civvy dist before I dropped it in....magneto shop here in town ordered it from Chicago, FedEx next day, $24 total...not bad considering...
