There was a member awhile back who posted pictures or should I say a picture of an XL 11x16 mounted under the bed in the factory location. Does anyone know who did this? I want to know what they did. I am convinced I can make one fit. Just don't know if I need to move the round tube crossmember just yet. Can't move it too far or rear axle could come in contact? Haven't measured yet. I am at the place where the last couple frame modifications need to be finished before I can paint the frame. Any advice helpful. Fisherman

Fisherman,

If I recall correctly, the round cross member is the hang up. The space is around 4 inches shorter (depth - front to back) than it is wide (side to side). Something like 36" deep and 40" wide. I think you had XLs - so you will need... call it 39 inches (incase you step up to XZLs).

I think you could move it froward, but the clearance does look tight. If you had the resources in the area - a bent box beam might work well. You would need around 1"-1.5" bend around the diff for full on bottoming out. I would weld braces to the frame from whatever you choose to do if it is moved forward. (I'm bad about overdoing stuff, just increasing the margin of error.)

Also, the exaust could be a problem. Mine's not stock, but it looks like it would be tight.

Post pics if you decide to do this!!! I'm interested in doing the same. Hope whoever did this will post up!

I've measured and measured. This is what I found. If your willing to live withouth the pintle hitch, and the pintle hitch nut, that will gain you around 11/2 inches. Then you move the round crossmember forward. I would torche out the rivets and remove it completely. Then go with a piece of 3" by 2" rectangle by 1/4 inch thickness and weld in with reinforcements in the corners. This would clear the upward travel of the rear differential, assuming you kept the bumpstops. I could then do the cable hoist idea. But if you max out your load carrying capacity you only have about 4" between the bottom of the Xl mounted until your differential cover would come in contact with it. Maybe more if you snug the tire up tight to the bottom of the bed. I have not yet decided if I am willing to live with this. I think the work involved for the maybe I will get isn't worth it. I think my spare will live lying down in my bed. I will need to move it around or remove it when necessary. I'll keep everyone posted if I decide to do this modification. And yes I would love the person to post up that supposedly did this. Fisherman

Todd, are you going to run on-board air or some other type of compressor? You could just deflate the tire and mash it up in there.

Jtrucks only have the forward crossmember. They dont' seem to be twisting apart, either......

Yes, eventually it will have on board air and maybe a welder. I am going back outside, if I'm gonna do this I need to do it now. I need to finish what ever mods I'm gonna do back there because I need to finish my painting asap. And roll it back into the shop. I'll figure this out. Be back.

I've got my 38/13R16 TSL Swamper up there, by just modding the tire mount a bit.

Off the top of my head - could you shorten stops (attached to the bed) a little to get the tire to have more clearance?

Also, what about the 4 bolt pintle hitch mount instead of the 'uni bolt'? Might free up a little room.

This is what I've found, First Tacoma My 69 j-3000 did have the rear crossmember in about if not the exact same location as the M-715. For sure as I still have that piece laying in the scrap metal pile. I'm sure Hummer tires mounted up will fit, not sure if they will fit a stock truck but pretty sure they will as they are not 38". Bob maybe you could try one. I'm surprised this hasn't been done yet. As for the swampers Over2land I'm sure they fit because they can't be a true 38" either. I am going to remove the round tube crossmember. And replace it with 2" by 3" 1/4 " wall rectangle tube steel moved forward until it is against the vertical piece of steel that keeps the channel frame seperated or reinforced. I will fully weld it and maybe gusset it. On the underside of the bed I will remove the spare tire stops, as there is plenty of room for spare to tuck up about 4" further, almost snug against bottom of the bed is what I want. This will allow me to fit a 39" tall tire I do believe. I will use a cable hoist spare tire system from probably a chevy truck. That way it will be easier to position that large tire and wheel as you crank it up there. I am going to do the frame modifications today and the bed modifications later when I reinstall the bed. I will photograph everything and post pictures so others can see my success or mistakes. Hopefully this will work out nicely. Fisherman

OK, I just finished my rear round tube crossmember removal and fabrication of a new one. Thus allowing a 38" 11x16 XL tire to be mounted in the factory location. I believe a 40" tire will now fit, although I do not have one to try so only speculating there. The only thing I will have left to do is when i install the bed is to shorten or remove the two brackets underneath the bed allowing the spare tire to be tucked up tightly to the bed. I will also install a cable or chain spare tire asslembly so as to winch it straight up. I have on factory on my 93 chevy that looks good so I will probably try to get one like that or similiar. I have lots of pictures to post so bear with me while doing that. With the bed removed start to finish about 3 hours with all materials on hand. Pretty easy after I finally figured out what exactly had to be done in order for this to work properly. It took me a few days of looking and thinking to figure out what exactly I wanted to do. I WAS THINKIN " LOOK OUT " ANYWAY---- ONCE YOU REMOVED THE RIVETS FROM THE STOCK X-MEMBER COULD YOU JUST SLIDE IT FORWARD ENOUGH TO CLEAR THE TIRE AND REDRILL THE HOLES AND BOLT IT IN ?

Thanks You guys, this worked for me, made with materials I had available. Yes Bob sliding the original crossmember forward will net you some more clearance, but not enough for what I needed. It was pretty straight forward. Sorry Porkchop I only finally got to this point last week and now I will be finishing the painting of my frame hopefully today or tomorrow.

Some credit should be given to Snuffy, I had a friend who thought I should use the drop down cable or chain from another truck to hoist up the spare. Snuffy you reconfirmed, that was a great idea. Also the idea about cutting the tire stops underneath the bed. I had thought about that, it is good to know that someone else was thinking the same thing I was. Gave me a some inspiration to make it a go.

Hey, Pete, the height of the XLs is 38-1/2". Mine, slightly worn, are an honest 38-3/8".


Excellent job, Todd! Now I'm going to have to ponder doing the same thing. I was going to put a box or additional gas tank under there, but now I'm going to have to re-think that plan! Those XLs take up a ton or room in the bed, after all.

I pulled my fuel tank out two weeks ago to make the sender work again and could barely fit my head between the axle and the tank while undoing the tank straps.

Iam not trying to pick on the work. I like the solution to the spare problem and will proably copy it in some for or other. Great work and looks good.

idea:
i'd imagine if you were using a tire that had a softer sidewall when deflated, you could leave that tube there. you would just compress that edge of the tire when it came into contact with the tube. of course, you would have on-board air to fill the spare. this is where mine is going after i reroute exhaust.

who am i kidding? i have 10 other more important items to do.

The crossmember is above the rear axle, and if fully loaded there will be about 2 inches between crossmember and top of pumpkin when sitting on the bumpstops. I don't believe I will ever haul anything to put her to the bumpstops. Also I could mount a bumpstop on the crossmember to contact the top of the differentia. As far as all my measurements the stock gas tank should clear fine.

Barrman, man you got me all worried, went back out and measured again today, between 6 and 7 inches between crossmember and rear of gas tank. I know I meaured everything at least 4 times on 3 different days. Still quite a abit of work left to do before the cab and bed go on. It'l be a couple months.

And there's no way that axle won't clear it. Even if both bumpstops mashed up to the metal, there'd still be a good inch. You're set, man.....
