4BT cummins
Post by truckin on Jun 5, 2006, 5:17pm
Does anybody have any pictures of Lee's swap or any other 4bt swap? I'm curious as to how much room there is under the hood with this engine. Also, are the gear ratios the same in the diesel nv4500 as the gas version?
Thanks,
Brad

there is p[lenty of room for a 4bt cummins engine and you can go 2 ways with the trans. stock trans and 4.10 gears with 37.5 tall tires or a nv4500 style trans with 4.56 gears and taller tires helps. i,ll have pix comming soon on the stock trans setup. i,am waiting on some bushings for the t-case swap to come in ( AGAIN they sent me the wrong ones ).

I am interested in the 4bt/6bt swap for my 715. I'm thinking more along the lines of the 4bt. This is a rather general question and I know it depends on a lot of variables (i.e., tire size, axle gear ratio, trans. ratio, OD or not, driving style...), but what kind of MPG do you think I could expect out of a 4bt in my M-715? Does anybody know approx. what Lee got with his? Am I looking at less than 10, more than 10? I am asking because my Jeep is for Search and Rescue, and I am wondering what my range in miles would be. I am looking at many options, just trying to gather as much info as I can. Thanks.

Lee said he was getting 25-30mpg. He and Tom also told me that there was a lot of shifting and a pretty short powerband.
and yeah, there is a ton of room for a 4bt.

Wow, 25-30 isn't bad at all. His was NA right? What does a turbo do your MPG? I would think it would decrease it because your pushing more A/F mixture. Am I correct?

Anybody know of a good source for engines? What's the going rate? I know they are in the frito trucks, but I don't see alot of them for sale around here.
Thanks for all the info,
Brad

Just finished helping with a 4bta swap into a '79 F250 4x4. Worked really well. Used a zf5spd from a 460 behind it. Won't bore you with all the details here, but looks like it is going to get somewhere around 28-30 mpg. Learned some useful info about these swaps. If ya'll want to know about the stuff we ran into and the solutions we found send me a pm.

Bob, out of curiosity what would it cost for parts and labor to have a 4BT, NV4500 and np205 installed, also what is the time frame start to finish?
Thanks

you picked the highest dollar swap you could.engines start at 1500.00 for a take out, trans. runs 1000.00 and up useually, finding a dodge divorced t-case 250.00 and up. hope you got deep pockets. time frame 4-10 weeks depending how far you want to go.1500.00 plus materials for labor. fuel milage i,ve found to be 18 to 24 mpg.

I agree, I was expecting a big $$$$ figure.
I'm a low buck project guy...but $4,250 just to walk up and have it done is a better deal than most will realize.

That is great price, but you still have to figure in the cost of the new gears or axle swaps, I have a guy locally who will do a gear swap for $200 per. Is this a good price? I'm a little scared to do it myself because I have a habit of getting frustrated and saying thats good enough and leaving stuff half assed.

$200 isn't bad. If you're not familiar with doing them, pay someone who is...otherwise you could very well end up ruining the gears and paying for them, and the install next time around.

keep in mind these are minumum prices !!! there alot to take into account. like shipping, gas to get parts, does the engine need o/h, clutch setup, bellhousing setup, does the trans need O/H , drive shafts, motor mounts, new radiator, p/s pump, a/c compressor, air filter assy, fuel tank mod. for return fuel line. buy the time your done CORRECTLY it 10,000 to 15,000 bucks is my sperience.

Lee found a Frito-Lay truck with a running 4BT, 2wd NV4500 for less that $800 if I remember right. He sold the rest of the truck for more than $1000 once he pulled the parts he needed. If you can find a complete vehicle with the parts you need, you can usually make money on the deal if you are patient and know what you are doing. I have been working on a local guy for a '73 Dodge 4x4 truck with a divorced NP205. I am trying to get the truck for $180.00. I know I can get that and a lot more our of the parts I don't take. It just takes time.
By the way, I was at Bob's shop in March. He does really good work and has pallets of engines all over the place. Finding someone that has experience doing this kind of thing is almost more valuable than the parts if you are not going to do it yourself.
