transfer case ?

to all that read i need some advice.
my tranfer case seems to have a probilem when i try to drive there is a noise under my seat and the 4x4 high and low levers pull apart from each other.

i was told to change out the tranfer case to a np 205 and my trany to a sm465 or a new venture with a 5th gear overdriver

i was woundering what adive would be given
oh my m715 has a small block 350 in it.
any feed back would be nice
i was also woundering if it is true that the np 200 has probilems if driven over 50mph

I'm amazed anybody would take the time to put a 350 in your M715 and not change the tranny or transfer case. I suggest you take a trip to your local junk yard find an old Blazer take out the tranny and transfer case have them rebuilt it and install it, that should solve your problem.

I have seen several 350s with the stock trans and tcase....it cures the problem many people have or perceive with the 230 AND adds power...quite a bit of it.

Driven above 50 mph for distances of 50 + miles, especially in warm weather, will make heat in many NP200 cases...there are some that dont have the heat problems...there are others that do...mine does.

The tcase is roughly below the rear part of the cab...so a noise under your seat could be coming directly from it OR the trans even. Not being able to hear the noise limits the ability to diagnose this...is it a grinding or something else? Is it from just above idle and up or from, say 30 mph or so and up?

The sticks moving apart....they do get loose at times...and they can move a little under the torque of the drivetrain...more from the former than the latter by far. The shift linkage, when tight and not under big torque input, doesnt move in that way...not in any that I have seen anyway...the linkage is pretty solid if tight is my point.

As far as the NP205...i is a great swap for an M715.
You do ave to make mounts...you can use the stock crossmember and go from there...we have several peoples methods online...
You need to do a little machine work to get the stock ebrake to work with the NP205 as well.

In the end though, it gets rid of the heat issues of the NP200, the whine of the NP200, and is just as strong...it also has support in local auto parts sources to a greater degree than the NP200.

A lot of people have done it. Get the adapter & fab some quick Spicer mounts & throwing in the 350 is a long afternoon's work. As apposed to having to make tranny & t-case mounts too.
Personal recommendation - just switch out the np200 for a 205. The T98 is a good transmission. No, it doesn't have OD but unless you plan on a lot of hwy driving it is just fine.
That being said, if you are flush with cash and don't mind a little extra work then get an OD trans too. While you are at it replace the origional axles with a set out of a CUCV and Bam! Modern truck capable of all the highway driving you want :) lol

Yes Jon, I was merely pointing out to Slug that the 350 by itself was quick & easy unlike having to build a complete t-case and tranny mounts from scratch.

but id i drive it over 5 mph the tranfer case makes a noise not gear grinding but more of a popping noise

so i was told that most likely the baring is shot and it is poping the 4 drive in and out of i think that as you both said it is best to change it to a sm 465
i do intend on driving it on the hwy what is your recomindation for a tranny

i was thinking of a np 205 with a tranny with a OD but i have no idea what has be used or works well with the setup

If you want to go with a manual trans, the NV4500 has been used behind GM motors and with the NP205...Barrman has that setup with a 396 motor...there are a few threads on that.

If an auto, I would think the 700R4/4L60 or the newer 4L80 would be the choices...

For the cost of an OD tranny I bought a set of CUCV axles - just saying. The stock R&P is 5.87:1 and the CUCV axles are 4.56:1 - will bring the revs way down.
The t-case is divorced so it is relatively easy to swap out for a 205.
The T98 is a good strong transmission with a creeper gear & 1:1 in 4th. If new axles aren't in the picture Jon's recommendations are good. NV4500 for stick, 700R4 for Auto. If you are going that way then get a married 205 - 2 less u-joints to lube or fail.

FYI: Going to a 4.56 axle gear with a stock tire is the same as going to a 44 inch tall tire on a stock 5.87 axle...its a BIG move in ratio.

With everything stock at 65mph you have to turn 3770rpm. Switch to the 4.56 gears & you are down to 2929rpm.
Leave everything stock but add a .85 OD & the rpm only drops to 3205. I'm not that great with chebby transmissions but I think you can get the NV4500 with a .72 OD which will drop you down to 2714rpm.

Well heck, I've just talked myself into saying go with the NV4500/NP205 & leave the axles alone for now :) Unless you are going to thrash the pizz out of it or run monster tires that is.

Has anyone tried the synthetic gear lubes to see if that helped with the overheating?

Yes...no real difference noted.

Also moving the driveshaft from the passenger side output to the center has been done and didnt make a difference either.

I have done both and run a temp gauge and no improvement.

People have discussed going to 50W oil but I dont know of any test results from that yet.

Others have thought about a cooler and pump but the cost of a decent pump for gear oil and the plumbing and all involved seriously exceeds the cost of putting in an NP205.

Basically what it all amounts to, is this:

Either live with a truck that at 45-50 MPH is in its happy spot, or swap out the transfer case for a more modern and streetable unit.

I've mulled this over enough, that I can't see any better and more reasonably priced option than a NP205 to fix (not patch over) the limitations of the NP200.

If its making popping noises at that low a speed, I would be concerned there is internal damage of some kind...

By the way, it an NP205...New Process did both the stock NP200 and the #1 upgrade you are looking for, the NP205.

History...the NP200 was first used in the M37 in 1950. It was designed for a flat head motor turning around 2700-2800 rpms. That is around 50 MPH in the M715 and the fastest the NP200 wants to be run without heat issues. The NP205 is actually the new, updated version of the NP200...came out in the early 70's. So changing from the NP200 t he NP205 is changing from the older, flathead version, t-case to the modern replacement for it.

In case it matters, the NP205 was used up to around 1 ton or a little more...there is also an NP202 that ws used in trucks of 1 1/2 ton and more...its basically a big NP205, a bit bigger all around but looks and works the same.

thanks for all the info the probiblem was the drive line linkage between the tranny and transfer case yoke bareing went you and welded its self and the other shattered i replaced the yokes and got a np205 i am going to rebuild but it look like i want to get a good tranny with a over drive gear what would you recommened

yes i read the the nv 4500 is a trany with an overdrive
but it has a flaud 5th gear and i have heard that they crap out on the OD
what if any other trannys are a better choice if you had to make one
with a np205 rthat i am getting in soon

Spicer 3053a out of a Deuce is a good choice, although you'll need to find a bellhousing. You pretty much can't break one of them in something like an M715.

The NV4500 is a fine transmission though, and quite a few members here run them without any problems. Keep the correct fluid in them and don't abuse them any worse than anything else and you'll be fine.

Is your 205 married or divorced? Makes a difference on available choices.

non-overdrive sm465 (married or divorced)
overdrive nv4500 (married or divorced)
overdrive spicer 3053a (divorced only)

BTW, the chevy nv4500 doesn't have the 5th gear problems like the dodge versions.

you can put a pto on the nv4500, sm465, 3053a and the np205 transfer case.

There are two pto ports on a NV4500. Good luck finding a pto for less than $500 though. I have never even seen a listing for a two speed or reversible NV4500 either.

A NP205 with a pto has as many speeds as your transmission and is reversible.

I got a nv4500 pto from a guy in Bryan last month for $150. How lucky is that? single speed-non-reversible.

You shouldn't be invading my home area getting that kind of stuff. Actually, I am glad to see they are coming up on the market now that those trucks are getting salvaged out. Since none were around when I put mine in back a few years ago. That is good.

you seem to have selected your t case and tranny set up so here is my 2 cents on the 350 engine ideal . im giong to put a 350 tuned port injection in my truck because the tpi set up has very good low end torque and makes all of its torque below 2800 rpm and all its horse power below 4800 rpm . i bought a whole 1989 firebird for 500 bucks and had everything i need so i dont spend alot buying it in peices . as for putting it in my truck it is really not all that much more work putting it in than a 350 with a carb . also try to get a setup from a 1987 to 89 to get the engine with a roller cam and lifters . also dont use a 1990 to 92 tpi because it has speed density and not mass air like the 1985 to 1989 does . mass air is that if you make a change in the cam or add other performance parts and the engines computer will respond to the high perfomance parts and will produce more hp and torque .
