Weekend project
I took the M725 to get the exhaust fixed so I need a weekend project. I have been planning to bob off a truck for some time so I decided to start this weekend. Went a lot easier than expected. Other than the busted lip and a couple smashed fingers. I used the front springs and shackles from a deuce. a M101 trailer bed so I did not need to cut the drive shaft. I am thinking I need to raise the bed four to 6 inches. The hubs still need to be flipped and mount shocks.
I managed to brake both rear break lines so I am in need of another brake line.

That looks real good Steve. The tires for it are already loaded in my M715.
-
Man he always forgets the people that help him LOL but its been fun working on it:lol:
-
Joe, did you help or just work the loader on the tractor?
-
That truck with the slightly tilted bed, narrow wheelbase and ndts looks like an old 30's or 40's pick-up truck. I think 1500's are going to make a big difference.
-
Nice work, I'm still on the diesel 715 and have a duece ready to modify once the 715 is opperational again.
I bobbed a duece last year simillar to yours, keep in mind if you have to change the in tank fuel pump you need enough space to remove it sometimes the bed gets in the way if its not raised high enough.
Nice how those trailer beds line up with the truck frame almost like they were supposed to be there.
-
I have a scraper M35 out back. I was thinking of cutting the frame from under the bed and welding the 101 bed to it. That would give me 6" or so.
-
The bobbed look is pretty cool..

It will get super singles. Either my new 12.5 / 20 (40" tall) or 395/85/20 (46" tall) Michelin XL's.
I still have to flip the rear hubs.

I want my truck to look like yours. I just posted pictures of mine with a 105 bed sitting on the back. I left the trailer frame attached to the bed, and used a 2x4 for the wood strip. I think it looks funny. I still have the stock ndt's on it, so maybe it will look better with 395's on it.
Are you thinking of adding the extra frame to help with tire clearance?
-
With that double frame, you should have plenty of room for a cylinder to make it dump!

Wheels
Looks great!! Where do I find wheels like yours? I have my 395s on USA 6x6 wheels but I want to use miliary wheels if I can find some.
Thanks

I added 3" to the stock rims. Here is a step by step on how I did them.

I just built the rims on this truck. They did not take very long this time. I used riveted rims this time for the 3" extension. Once the extension was welded to the rim I cuy the center out and then cut each of the rivets one at a time. A lot faster and did not have any balance issues.

I think the bed is sitting a bit high (how high is it off the ground now?)
Do you think you can lower it and still have enough room to pull the fuel pump/module out?
Otherwise, it looks GREAT!
-
I'd leave the bed height alone, but weld some cabinet-type tool boxes to the underside of the four corners. It would also be neat to mock the M715-style mailboxes under the front corners of the bed (although they'd just be short in depth).
-
First pic, with the box sitting low looks the best, but fender/tire clearence looks too tight.
The pic with the box high, the rail height looks good, but wheel opening looks too high.
Lots of work, but I'd be tempted to shorten the duece box and cut some correctly styled wheel openings into it.
As far as utility, the box being at stock height is pushing it. Makes it a pian to load stuff in and out.
-
Looking foreward to some real world "seat of the pants" impressions of a bobbed duce.
We see a few down here but everyone seems to finish the project just to flip it on the internet.
Truck looks great, nice job.

I think the bobbed duece bed looks best but if you are going to use the trailer bed maybe lower it down a little so that from the rear view the bottom of the bed is just low enough to hide the top of the tires or add the angled piece there like the duece bed.
