Out of curiosity ,how many members have the original 230 and how many have swapped in something else ? Not sure how an actual poll is done,maybe someone could start one. What made me think about this was seeing a NOS 230 dist. sell for 291.00 on ebay(which must mean there is a demand for stock parts). Mine will have a stock 230 when time allows to put it in. Anyway what have you got??

Currently stock. Getting ready to swap in an AMC 360.
I have stock engine in both M715 and M725. It seems to me many replace the 230 with something more common once the 230 needs costly repairs or they just want more power. My 715 runs pretty good and has enough power for how I use it. The 725 is more of a parts truck at the moment.
Mine has a rebuilt chevy 230 straight 6 swapped in by a previous owner. About the same hp and torque as the stock 230 but will be much easer to swap in a sml block chevy in the future from this set up.
I swapped in a Mopar 440 w/727 trans.
Can one of the mods add a poll to this thread? I think it would be interesting to see in a poll something like:
-Stock engine and stock transmission
-Swapped engine and stock transmission
-Swapped engine and different transmission
I have one M-715 with stock engine/trans, and one M-725 with a 318 and NP435 transmission.

Mine's swapped (motor and tranny) but if the 230 had better manners I would've stuck with it. I hate messing with carburetors all the time.

I have 2 total stockers, another with a 350 V8 and stock driveline, and am currently building another with a 468 FI BBC, TH400, dual t-cases, M1009 diffs with detroits, hydo-assisted steering, and hydro-boosted 4-wheel disc brakes. I am still deliberating over A/C....
I pulled 230 out do to high maintnace and cost of parts. Now i am in the process of swaping a 460 ford with C6 auto stock transferscase.

I'm going with a 4bt and TH400. Just because thats what the Frito truck had in it.

402 BB Chevy and TH400. Stock driveline otherwise. My truck didn't have the original engine or trans when I got it and I wasn't about to put a 230 back in it. Far too expensive to rebuild one.
Went with the V8 with a Swapped Manual option.
AMC 360, Advance Adapters OD + Stock 4-speed.
The P.O. started swapping in a 318/727 in mine. One of my possibilities are to swap in a 307/700r4.
Not enough room for all the diesel combos here...but we can do a diesel vs gas swap on just motor stuff...
I put a 351 Cleveland V8 and a T-18 Rockcrusher trans with a divorced NP205. My 230 was doing the Batmobiles smoke screen impression too well.

1 M725 with a 360 dodge/T98/NP200
1 350 sbc/TH400/divorced NP205
1 5.7 sbc/NV4500/203/205 (in progress)
1 8.0L BBC/4l80E/203/205 (late summer or fall) w/cucv axles
I like the stock trucks. I haven't found it to be all that hard to keep the 230 running.
Currently stock engine and trans, only because I have not got around to swapping it out. Will be a Diesel (4bt/6bt/6.2or.5L) with an Auto trans w-OD, 205 divorced, 1008 14bolt rear & D60 front 456 gears(I think) and stock size tires, no lift or shackle and spring over.
Check back for progress in about....................a year :)

Other: 6.2 to Spicer 3053a to divorced 205. Even with cracked/leaking/lost exhaust pipes on the diesel, swaping out my 200 to the 205 made an unbelievable difference. Watching Toolman's stock truck at HIGH ALTITUDE at the FE, if my truck was stock and running well I would keep the stock set up except for the transfercase. That motor kept running when all the others were gasping. It was seriously impresive- gonz
At the moment, mine has all stock running gear except the engine was swapped out to a 292 Chevy six.
In the not-too-distant future (hopefully this summer), I am swapping in a 6bt and the axles out of a 90 dodge 1-ton, with a fuller 10-speed and divorced 205 transfer case.
there is something to be said about the old engines. the flatty was doing well also, and was being slowed down by Daves rental TJ more than the altitude.Quote:

I swapped in a 350 in my 725 and the rest of the drivetrain is stock. its not real good on the highway for long drives but works good offroad when you can drive slow. on one of my 715's Im using a 3/4 ton chevy 4x4 frame and running gear for better driveability on the highway. on the other Im totally boxing in the stock frame and contemplating using a hydraulic pivot just behind the cab to make the bed rotate independently from the cab plus 5 ton rockwells and 4 wheel steer. probably going to be running a whipple supercharged 496 with an auto od and an atlas transfer case with probably 3 gears. I built a 632 bbc but after the Col. fe, I sold it and want something with alot of power but still manageable on road too.
I road in several trucks that were stock and liked the way they did but parts are expensive and hard to find so i took the cheaper way out and parts are readily available. an overdrive tranny and a different transfer case would be a big plus in making your truck more of a highway friendly truck and you'd be better able to stay up with traffic without pushing your engine to hard.
About in 1980 I got my M715 and completely rebuilt it the first time until October 1982 , when I was a student.
I kicked the original engine out for at least one reson: It was broken, not ready to run without major repair. By that time I could not afford it. So I changed to a German Diesel (for 1200 DM), which was a vintage engine by that time allready, but it made the neccessary rpm. This engine served me well with only 65 hp until the serviceability was over (No more major part available like injection pump housing. I got in 1986 the last complete injection pump available in Germany as a factory change part for 1800 DM. Knowing that I bougt in 1996 a new 6.2 l Detroit Diesel V8, made 1984 according to the lables (for 6000 DM out of the original box). This all new engine I got running (8 hours on my homemade test bench) over the years to prepare to fit it to my M715 (including the adaptation of a manual shift clutch and to original M715 transmission. I did not know by that time that there are offers from the states for 600 to 800 $ for these kits)) With a new overall restauration in 2002 until 2004 it got into the truck. The engine is now at 393 hours (I fixed a REO tachometer to monitor the engine rpm), of course based on the REO engine design 1500 rpm as standard for one engine hour, as said on the tachometer housing).
Performance is very well for European leagal road driving with a truck over 3.5 t GVW. Legally I'm allowed to drive 50 mph . I drive 53 to 55 mph with acceptable fuel consumtion (18 to 22 litres a 100 km), for the performance even on a hilly Autobahn that is ok, also with a loaded M101A1 trailer.
The only problem is: I have to cut down the oil change intervalls of the transmission, the transfer and of the rear axle to the changing interval of the engine, every 5000 miles, due to overheated/burned oil.
In this case I know what I'm talking about. Trucks are my job!

My old Dept has 2 m715's both have 454's in them not sure on the tranny's everyone just called them "granny tranny's". They are very slow moving on the street only about 50mph tops or they tend to overheat. Offroad however they have all the power you could ask for and more stamina then even the newer trucks from other depts. I havn't got an M715 but I grew up crawling on these trucks and can't wait to find one in my area to get my hands on. When I do I think I'd like to go with a chevy 350 not sure on a tranny but I'm sure by then I'll have some idea of what to do with help from everyone here. :)
I to have the stock 230ci Tornado in mine. !3,500 miles on the odometer. Took out the starter two days ago, waiting for new one. No major problems yet. Very little smoke from exhaust occasionally. Lousy gas mileage (6mpg on a good day). Not a daily driver, so not to big a deal. Great for what I use it for.
Two trucks with completely stock driveline. One with a 8 cyl. motor swap. Two trucks with 8 cyl motors and auto trannies.
A stock truck with original 230 OHC. Don't know how to vote on the poll.
