As bad as the stock NDT's?

Probably, depends on what your doing, mud bogging, rock crawling, or daily driving with some offroad. I won't buy any tire with a solid raised tread down the center with no breaks, they are TERRIBLE on icy pavement. Ask me how I know...
Might be a little better but the tread is still uniped and looks like it rides pretty flat on the road...like a slick...
The stock tires slide everytime I hit the brakes and break loose in the gravel drive with no just a little throttle.
Oh well, just keep looking for alternatives but I am sure that road has been travelled many times before me.
I spent 3 years looking for XZL's. I started out hating my NDT's. Same reasons as listed above: about 1/2 inch of contact per tire on the street, bad on dry pavement, worse in mud and down right dangerous on wet pavement.
Then I went to the '05 Texas FE at Gilmer. Drove 250 miles there, aired down to 15 psi, climbed everything in site without slipping, went through mud and rocks with ease. The ride was great on dirt too.
I aired them up to 20 for the 250 mile drive home and they handled much better on the street.
My point is this: A good newer set of fresh 9.00-16 NDT tires aren't all that bad if you play with the air psi. Actually, for what the truck was designed to do. Carry 1-1/4 ton of cargo cross country up to 30 mph. They are great. Granted, the XL and XZL tires are better, but not by as much as you might think in the dirt empty.
I know this might be "polishing a t*rd", but has anyone tried siping the NDTs?
Might help with the wet traction.
How about these (for a 20 inch rim) -

41 inches ! Nice find.
Yes a nine find indeed!
Those are Euopean tires....they are marginally better than nodirects. A good pair of Wranglers XT (? basically the Hmmwv tire) will work good on your truck for all around multi road conditions
I can't say I hate NDT's but like Barrman said, they have their limits, but also have their advantages.
The deuce does OK with them unless I get really stuck, but any tire doesn't do much good clawing at greasy mud after 5 inches of rain under a 13,000 lb truck. Same thing with the 715. Even with 10 lbs of air in my TSL's in the right spot they are pretty useless under its 5,000 lbs. 6,000 with all my gear and extra parts. The winch is the best insurance policy. Other times they are the best tire I've owned. There doesn't seem to be a one-size-fits-all tire for the wheeling I have done.
All that said, if I were about to spend over $200 per tire, I'd either look for a set of XZL's or buy a resonably priced off-road tire. All four of my TSL's were about $800 with tax out the door.
Before the XL's and XZL's started to appear at govliq, I was looking for a decent on- and off-road tire for my 715. I ordered 2, to put on my M101A2 trailer to test them out and see how they'd work. I found some XZL's, but I still think these tires would be good for a stock-ish size on a 715...
I paid right at $200 each delivered, but that was 4 years ago.
Denman Coyote A/P

Here is a .pdf with the specs (Coyote is the last tire listed)...

edit: 10 ply, but I was looking for something more onroad than off, for towing and pulling a load.
I thought NTDs were the only thing on the table for consideration...
Continental also makes the MPT 80 and 81. Both for a 20" rim. Diameter for the 10.5R20 is ~37.4".
Used on Unimogs and are available in the States.

A couple of folks that carry them in the US:

DP's right about the Denmans. They have a pretty good rep.
My truck had 37" Goodyear M/T's Military weight tires on it when I got it. I am very pleased with their performance both on and off road. The ones I have are for the original HMMMV and mount on 16.5" rims and look. There is a guy on ebay that sells sets of 4 used and new for various prices depending on tread wear. I think he charges $100 for shipping for a set of 4. Link below:

I have seen pictures of WW2 1/2 tons and duces with thoes stye tires, they have been out in the 20 inch for a while, but they just started making them in the 16 inch size, One of the prototype jeeps also run them , probably in a 650x16 size, The problem with NDC tread is in wet weather YOU WILL SLIDE on pavement, I have run 900x16 on my 72 F250 for 25 years, I use my truck for mostly offroad in pastures, Pulling a trailer, hauling horses or cows. I would not run any other tire, The NDC run well in sand (which we have alot in south Florida) or dirt and clay . I have always run a tall narrow tire,so when you sink hopefully you hit bottom and grab something. On the road they make alot of noise and are a bear to balance. But use some commonsence and they are Great Tires
Link didnt work or me...
