Gonz 14 bolt question

two years ago you asked about swapping in a 14 bolt axle. I assume you finished the swap. The axle I have came from an 1980 cucv ambulance and the drums are so deep they wont clear the springs, if I leave the spring mounts alone.

I was going to cut the stock spring mounts off and box in the frame around the mount locations and fabricate new spring mounts to fit the 14 bolt. The new spring mounts would be located directly under the frame and would lift the rear about 6" more. Which could be ok, since I am doing spring over in the front.

Last night I scratched my head and couldn't decide just how to approach it. So I thought I would see if someone was able to fit a similar axle under stock spring widths. Those stock drums are deep and eat up axle length!!

You would be miles ahead if you just did a disc swap. WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY easier.

That's SOP for this swap, because it's cheap and easy and takes about 30min a side, if you've got a press. :)

Great site with tons of info... anywho, Taco, you must use a different version conversion to complete it in 30 minutes each side, cause there is no way I'm going to get it done that quick. It will take me 30 minutes just to make one caliper bracket. It took me more than 30 minutes to read the article.... coarse I am a slooow reader.

Can anyone verify whether or not the Cadi caliper has emergency brake set up?

Thee is a Cadillac disc brake caliper that has a cable operator e-brake in it.

There is a guy on pirate called ruffstuff specialties or something like that that sells a bolt on 14 bolt bracket for like $45 for both. He was supposed to be making a dana 70 one and was going to send me one for testing and I got tired of waiting and just modified a weld on one. With my 70 at least and I am sure some others the flange is exactly where the caliper bracket needs to be and you have to weld the bracket on to it. I am looking for ways to brace it. Took me the better half of the day to get it on there so it won't wear the pads funny (I am still not 100% certain I got it perfect). The bolt on might be a 30 min job but weld on/making sure isn't.

I also have the newer, easy 14bolt hub retention setup: a spring, a key, and a big nut. Very easy. :)

Pressing the studs out takes a while, I didnt' really time that though.

For the love of God, don't remind me what a slacker I am!!-LOL! I thought I had a 14 Bolt lined up recently, but the response from the seller has been difficult. I was (am) planning on disc brake conversion with El Dorado calipers.

I've got a 14 bolt you could have for next to nothing. Just need to figure out how to get it there.

Would that be the 14-bolt you're giving to me, there, Fisherman? Sheesh....





















Just kidding. If Gonz can use it, I'll even help drag it out as far as I can to him! A 14-bolt rear won't do me much good until I have a matching front end to go with it! As it is now, it would just be taking up the space that the 35-spline Dana 60 I finally gave away is about to vacate! ;)
