Great thread Ryan. It motivated me to go take a look at my sole remaining M715 that is stored on some property about 20 miles away.
I have owned it for about a year and a half and got a surprise when I went over today & checked it out. The Fire Department that had use of the truck prior to me buying it is up in North Georgia (big decal on the hood & door). The Chief of that department was the Ladder Driver at my station, on my shift, when I was an Atlanta Firefighter. I'll be calling him tomorrow to see if the tailgate for my truck is still at the station (I saw a thread here yesterday that suggested checking with the Fire Dept your M715 came from to see if they still had the tailgate). I don't know why it never occured to me that my M715 came from my buddy's Fire Dept, especially since our Captain from back in the day helped me go get the M715. It seems something would have clicked.
That isn't a funny lookin' carb, that's a throttle body fuel injection unit. (BONUS) One of those came stock on my '88 big block chevy P/U and it's probably the only thing I never had to replace. I put three differant motors under it. If you want to upgrade the chip for it I still have the stage two Hypertech for it. (You'll need 93 octane to run it though):(
It's the Hypertech stage 2 for an '88 3500 4x4 Chevy pick-up with the factory 454. It requires you to put a lower temp thermostat (160 degree) and 93 octane or better gas, it took me a little under a 1/2 hour to install. I had to tweek the timing a little because of my short exhaust and no catalytic converter but other than that it worked fine. I only used it for a month because of gas prices and the fact that gas was $3.50 at the time. 40 gallons at 8 MPG and a 60 mile commute daily doesn't add up.
It looks like you've got the exact set up that came stock on my P/U from the intake manifold up. You'd better stock up on the gasket that goes between the intake and the heat riser. It cracks on the sides between the bolts almost dead center and wreaks havoc sucking air.;)
i have a flat 1/2" aluminum plate style carb to tbi adapter plate that i was thinking about swapping over to, and a helix power tower tbi spacer thing that i got in the process of swapping and horse trading that i was going to use. it seemed like an excessive amount of gaskets though, so i may just take your advice and keep a few spares around.
i was going to have howell burn me a chip, but out of curiosity, how much would you sell your hypertech for?
ryan
To be honest you'll probably be better off gettin' one burned. They will ask specific questions on things like intake, exhaust, induction, fuel pressure, cam and will be able to tune it more for what you have. I paid $210 for my chip and it never really seemed to be right. I put the stock fuel and intake system on an H.O. 454 GM Performance parts crate engine and even with the chip it seemed to lean out at high RPM (4-5000). Back when I bought the chip you couldn't get one burned anywhere. Now there are 3 or 4 different places here in my town that will do it. Fuel and spark are the key and I know I had plenty of spark (MSD blaster coil, Accel 300+ wires, MSD distributer). I think the stock fuel meters (injectors) aren't up to the task because the fuel pump and adjustable pressure regulator I installed were capable of pushin' 15-30 PSI. My personal opinion (if it was my truck) would be to check out some of Edelbrock's new plug and play fuel injection units. They're a 4 meter (injector) version of what you have but the computer is set up for on-the-fly adjustability. Pretty Sweet!:happy10:
a few new pics of the jeep. i have wanted to make a new pitman arm for a while to get rid of the single shear and to add a little drop to bring the geometry a little closer to ideal. i started on this with the CAD drawings and stuff several weeks ago. finally got a chance to finish and cut/form it. spent the morning welding it together. all this so i can finally get some hydro assist steering.

nice work on the pitman arm Ryan I want one
Nice arm...that is NOT a weak link!!
Nice job on the arm!
Are you going with GM 63s in the rear? If so look forward to see how you mount them, I'm about to mount mine when I get home from work. I've got the old ones removed and almost have the rear section of the frame boxed in. Can't decided if I want to french the front rear hanger in or just weld and plate it to the bottom of the frame. The rear hangers could go either way as well. What are your thoughts?
they are actually 60"ers from a 3/4 ton suburban. the burbs are a little shorter for some reason.
i thought about frenching them, but in the end i dont think it will be worth it. i am going to ramp the front face of the hangers so they slide. my other thought for not frenching the hangers was the fact that i am pretty sure i will need the extra height from leaving them under the frame. so my plan is to go under the frame and probably through the frame for a bushing at the rear for the shackle. ill know more when i get into it further.
ryan
I was thinking the same on gaining more lift by leaving them under the frame without frenching them in.
Post the pics once you get started.
most definately. it may be this winter though. i want to get the parking brake figured out before it gets cold and we are set to get busy at work, so i will probably wait till after that so i can hopefully use the work shop for a weekend to get it done
Ryan
the steering gear is in california at Howe performance being rebuilt and ported. when it comes back it will have a shiny new hydro assist ram with it :)
ryan
finally, after longer than anticipated due to some back ordered parts, its here. now i have a weekend project...

box is back on. made a diff ring tonight to mount the ram

Nice parts, can't wait to see them installed.
welded the tabs on the diff ring. also picked up the hydralic lines and the fittings last night. so as soon as i get off the couch, i will go set all that up.
a little weld action

everything is mounted and hooked up. seems to work good, i think i have a bubble to get worked out in the hydro-boost but other than that it is good. i also think that i will end up buying a performance pump. the stocker works ok, but needs throttle to move the tires at a standstill or very slow motion when at idle or just over. street driving is fine.
http://i94.photobucket.com/albums/l8...5/100_1521.jpg
need to take the clamp off and flip the one side so the halves line up better.
http://i94.photobucket.com/albums/l8...5/100_1520.jpg
have a box of matching counter sunk bolts on order. i will have to re-goo the diff cover when they come in tomorrow

what size tubing did u use for the cross member under the engine. I'm a rookie at fabbing but I figure its time to learn.
it is 1.75" .120 wall DOM. it was an easy part, two bends in identical in the same plane.

My truck also is just used for parades and local cruise nights. The truck gets more attention than the 700hp camaro my son and i built. I to only put on maybe 1000 miles per seaon. I say season because it doesn't go out on the salty streets of northern Illinois in the winter. What's really amazing to me is that i"ve never seen the M715 on the street before. My truck has to be the only one of it's kind around here. Have been doing car shows and cruise nights for 30 years or more, and never ever saw a truck like mine. Maybe living in this area has something to do with it. It's a shame if people have to let their trucks go because of costs, but it's also nice to know people out there are still waiting to buy them. Happy Holidays.
Any news on your rear spring project?
it is still in line. i want to get a parking brake set up sometime, and i have been tinkering with the TBI trying to get rid of a cold weather related stumble. we have been under the gun at work since early september and i just havent had much time to spend on the truck. i snuck in the gas tank and steering since i was able to do most of that work in my driveway, but i will need to borrow my bosses shop for at least a weekend to do the springs. since we are piled up with stainless at work there hasnt been room in the shop for more than a day or two at a time lately.
i am still hoping to get it accomplished before the spring melt opens all the trails. we have at least one more big dryer to do and rumor of another. and the boss is supposed to go to Chile after the first of the year, and that very well may turn into another dryer. so the forecast is weak for extended jeep time. nonetheless i am going to do some shopping after the holiday and get some more parts on the way so as to hopefully motivate me to find time to do the swap. good news is that we are getting a new 3D modeling program at work, an hopefully i will be able to play with it a little and make some cool parts when the swap comes due.
how was that for way more answer than you wanted?
thanks for the info
Ryan,
This may have already been answered in your 36 pages here, but how have you liked the 40054 springs as far as ride/flex/anti-wrap? Would you use the same ones if you were to do it again?
Thanks -
Ben
Where have you been? Looking for an update on the truck and some more pictures of your amazing fab skills? How has the TBI been working?
How well documented has this build been. The photos are unreal. They tell the whole story and appreciated very much. It proves, a picture is worth a thousand words.
Holy cow. I just went back through this thread. What a walk down memory lane.
I still have the 715, but a lot has changed in the rest of life in the 10 years that have passed...
I recently moved back to Iowa with my wife(same one as before!) We have a 2 year old girl and a 1 year old boy now and twins currently being cooked! We left Colorado for a few reasons but hopefully will be back in the west once the kids are a little older and gma and gpa are retired.
The 715 was a champ for years, playing on trails here and there and being the coolest cruiser all summer. The 454 in it finally got used up and the efi couldn't keep it running unless it had warned all the way up. That was probably 3 years ago. It got beached and sat in waiting. I've been in Iowa now for a year, got our house mostly remodeled and caught up on my side business work while holding down a job running a mfg plant fab/weld shop in town. I recently got the jeep in the shop to finally do some updates!
I'll start another thread since this epic is best left as it is, a presentation of the past.
Feels good to be back on the zone!
Ryan
Nice glad you posted up over here. I couldn't believe it when I saw you on irate4x4 with your M715. Talk about a blast from the past. Glad to see you still have it.
Dang, I was wondering who dragged up an old thread and it’s Roo!
Great to hear from you! My twins are 17 now, let me know if you have any questions. Don’t be too much of a stranger- gonz
