Well the rear axle is finally going back together. The brake backing plates came out unbelievable! The Glyptal 1201-A Insulating compound was the trick for the plate insides.

Quick question...
I have heard several people here say to turn the drums with the HUB ON, for each wheel.

Are you planning on doing that or am I confused as to the proper way to turn and index the drums ?

Also, did that axle just slide right out, or was there a C clip E clip inside the differential holding it in?

( I know about the 4 backing bolts )

Well, we finally starting assembling the new brake stuff. The so called "pre bent" brake line kit from VPW is close but requires a lot of CAREFUL caressing. The over sized lines are a nice item though! I do like that. New rear bump stops are installed now as are the new rear brake piston cylinders. I wanted to paint the cylinders with Eastwood brake fluid proof cast gray paint but taking them out of the wrappers, I realized they were deep coated in 1970 era MIL SPEC Type II corrosion preventive spray coating, (about 1 step below cosmoline) so I left them as is. Other than that, new flex hose and new spring clips. Painstaking and checkbook draining I tell you! But, FUN ALL THE WAY!!!!!

Not correct way to do it but this will make it real easy now for people to find my VIN number on the right wheel frame rail. Shouldn't look too stupid once the bed goes on (I hope).

Why not just sand the black paint off the number pad leaving the paint in the stampings? Then over coat with a clear layer. Numbers are visible from top without any telltales from the side view.

Well, not much else to do currently while waiting on things so we installed the new plugs and wires: Looks pretty good if I may say so myself. Hope ya' all like.

Very nice.
The black wire ties look so good and proper. I'm sure that if done today, that is what they probably would have used.
I'm going to use the hose breeze bands, even though they look ridiculous.

Don't forget the ground strap, which is bolted along with the right engine mount.

Man that looks sharp.
