New E-Brake drum is painted and installed now with new hardware. I really wanted the drum spun and balanced to alleviate any of my previous concerns but A- it costs too much to go to a civilian balance shop and B- my past FREE WORK contacts in the U.S. Navy world have all rotated and transferred out of the 92A "Sound Analysis and Balance" Repair Shops on the ships and shore duty billets so, I'll leave my fears behind for now.

Working on the transfer case and e-brake clevis' and linkage today. :-D Hopefully my new E-Brake band from VPW will arrive today. (fingers crossed)
Stay safe and stay happy folks!

WOW! The new E Brake band and return springs arrived from VPW today. Big difference compared to what I removed from the truck. My brake was grease and oil soaked and burnt out and the return springs were collapsed. .
Best wishes from Newport News, Va.

Shift levers all installed. I have a spacer problem though. Previous owner(s) must have lost the spacers and used flat washers. I'll replace the washers with bushings next week when I'm off from work again. I'm really liking the OD paint. The new hand grips are a nice touch I'd say.

Looking very good Dave!
You make me feel like a slacker the last two weeks.:)
Dave, regarding balancing the brake drum. Check local Harley shops, perhaps they can point you to a shop that does Harley flywheel balancing. Best would be to leave the hub assembled to it with index mark(s) for future work if necessary.

Hi all! Well the new E Brake band is installed now. I have a little touch up detail painting to do. Have a feeling adjusting this thing isn't going to be very simple.
Best wishes!

Looking good.
The service manual tells to adjust the band by using a feeler gauge.
The procedure sounds easy enough.
But, mine is contacting the drum in places after doing so, as the band isn't perfectly concentric.
Might need to wear in, then readjust.
You said that your drum didn't show any signs of overheating, but boy, those old springs sure look like it.
And if the brake band is not concentric and is rubbing in a few places, you may be able to "Adjust" it with some sandpaper in strategic locations. I still have this task to accomplish. No doubt, my brake band is saturated with oil. Which old one isn't ? ;)

Well, we got the rear axle halfs and hubs apart last night. Time to clean them up, paint the hub outer sides, install new bearings - seals paint the brake plates and get it back together. :D
Have a good day everyone!

Well the rear axle is finally going back together. The brake backing plates came out unbelievable! The Glyptal 1201-A Insulating compound was the trick for the plate insides.
Wishing everyone a wonderful safe day.

Looking Clean enough to eat off of...
Quick question...
I have heard several people here say to turn the drums with the HUB ON, for each wheel.
Are you planning on doing that or am I confused as to the proper way to turn and index the drums ?
Also, did that axle just slide right out, or was there a C clip E clip inside the differential holding it in?
( I know about the 4 backing bolts )
thanks !
6 August 2014-
Well, we finally starting assembling the new brake stuff. The so called "pre bent" brake line kit from VPW is close but requires a lot of CAREFUL caressing. The over sized lines are a nice item though! I do like that. New rear bump stops are installed now as are the new rear brake piston cylinders. I wanted to paint the cylinders with Eastwood brake fluid proof cast gray paint but taking them out of the wrappers, I realized they were deep coated in 1970 era MIL SPEC Type II corrosion preventive spray coating, (about 1 step below cosmoline) so I left them as is. Other than that, new flex hose and new spring clips. Painstaking and checkbook draining I tell you! But, FUN ALL THE WAY!!!!!
Have fun and be safe everyone!

Not correct way to do it but this will make it real easy now for people to find my VIN number on the right wheel frame rail. Shouldn't look too stupid once the bed goes on (I hope).

Very nice.
The black wire ties look so good and proper. I'm sure that if done today, that is what they probably would have used.
I'm going to use the hose breeze bands, even though they look ridiculous.
Don't forget the ground strap, which is bolted along with the right engine mount.
Man that looks sharp.

Well the rear end is back together. Time to start on the front one now.
Hope everyone is well.

Where did you find replacement springs for the brakes? Will a generic spring kit for a j4000 work?
Memphis has the springs. Little pricey but they have them.
I'm about to rebuild my brakes and might just use the old springs. (Wire wheel and paint)
I just noticed that you are in Newport News. I was just the a couple of weeks ago visiting my son at Eustis. We had a great time in the area
Well, after some haggling, I finally have a tailgate thanks to a member on here. :-) I can't say thank you enough!!!!!

We also fabed up the muffler flanges and tacked welded them. Perfect fit. Now to disassemble, do a 360 full weld on it and re-install. The flanges came off the old rusted out muffler and the new muffler cost me 34 dollars.

10 December 2014.
well we are finally moving along a little faster here at "FSB Elmo" (inside joke around here). The rolling chassis is all complete now. All I have left to do on it is install the main hard pipe fuel line. It has been real interesting the last 14 months finding a lot of the parts I needed. But, it's not the destination that keeps us going, it's the journey. If it wasn't for all the folks on here, I still may have been looking at a pile of rust and broken stuff. LOL!
Any hoo - we started on the body work. First up will be the cab tub. Hope everyone is doing well and is safe.

Great to here from you Dave.
Looks like your cab isn't too bad at all.
Great way to pass the winter months.:)
Ruh-Roh Raggy...... Houston we have a problem.... the wire wheel on the business end of my shipyard days Milwaukee angle grinder found me a problem child today. Driver's side rocker panel is Swiss Cheese. No problem. Just a minor set back. Already ran to the phone and ordered one from the good folk at VPW.

Keep the picks coming Dave!
Great job as usual. Your truck should one day be in a museum!
Newport News, Va. 17 Feb. 2015. -
Well, winter sucks absolutes here in Virginia this year. Work on "War Pig" came to a crawl again for awhile but we managed to get all the rusted metal replaced. The replacement rocker panels I purchased were no where near "genuine replacement" as advertised so a lot of rebending and much caressing had to happen. I'm lucky enough that my next door neighbor has access to a nice commercial box pan and brake. We also replaced the terrible pre-existing slave cable hole mount on the right side cab post and then redrilled a new mount in. Couple of new pictures of the progress.
Hope everyone is doing well.
Best wishes as always!

And I have seen k8icu's work in pics...I am a poor hack next to him....
Nice work...keep it up!!!!
Hey Dave , I see your really diggn' into this project. I heard you mention your days working in the shipyards. That explains the trade skills . I'm a Boliermaker myself. Here's hoping I can afford to start one of these trucks and get to work as well. Some great workmanship here. Hope I can follow your example. Very educational .I'll be following this thread. Kind Regards MK
Dave, you don't know who made those rocker panels, do you? Heard goodmark was making them and wonder how the quality is.
Duane. I don't remember who made them but I bought them through VPW. Good quality steel that matches the exact thickness of the OEM metal. It's not treated with anti rust protectant so that hassle of removing the goop was non-existent.
They aren't a 100% match fit out of the box. You will have to do some caressing but they work great and look beautiful!
I didn't install the entire panels. I just used them as donor material and cut out what I needed and used it as patch panels to replace the swiss cheese stuff.

MK- (53hydraglide),
I didn't spend my entire adult working days in the Shipyards. I did 24 long years in the US Navy as a Engine Room Hole Snipe and Flight Deck Supervisor as a Electrician. I retired as a Chief Petty Officer (E-7). It's kinda where I learned how to do a lot of different stuff. If we couldn't get a replacement part, we just made one and beat on it to make it work. :-) The Shipyard days was a 4 year experience in trying to destroy what little was left of my body and I had to give it up. Loved the work but couldn't keep up with the young kids any longer. Now, I have a easy life as a Engineering Operator in a data center for a World wide banking company.
Thank you for the kind words Sir!
