I went to register the M101A2 as a former military vehicle yesterday and discovered a new twist.
When the new TXDMV took over from TXDOT doing the registrations in Texas, they redid the computer programs. It seems former miltary vehicle trailers got dropped as a catagory. However, since the paper work says a trailer counts, the ladies in the office kept trying. They could not make my bumper numbers be taken by the system. They could make the numbers work if they called the trailer a truck and they could tag it as a fmv if they issued me a fmv plate.
It took an hour and many phone calls to Austin to get worked out. What they did was do the trailer up as a regular utility trailer. They even pulled a trailer plate from the back and assigned me those numbers. Then, once that deal was all done except for me paying, they went back in to edit it. Type of trailer was changed to former military vehicle and the plate number became my bumper numbers.
It all worked out in the end. Mostly because the ladies there know me and have done the fmv thing 3 times in the past for me. They "Knew" there was a work around waiting to be found. Maybe this will help others get their work done faster. I would also imagine this could be the first fmv trailer to be registered since the TXDOT to TXDMV switch and a new computer catagory is being created as I type making this all a waste of time.
Just remember that the more you know and have printed out to help them the better this process goes in my experience.

might need texas insurance but the drivers license doesn't matter. I don't think they have ever looked at my dl when I register a car.
