Kind of OT, but is there a difference between an alternator and a generator? Or is it just two words that mean the same thing in this case.

It is an alternator if it is stock to an M715. Some of the units themselves even say generator and its so written in places in the manuals but they are alternators in this series of trucks.
I think....my opinion only....that since generators were the thing that had been around forever and alternators were fairly new, the terms got confused.
Here is my Prestolite:

If you look at the large OD flat head screw at the top of the pic, just to the left of that it says:
VOLTS
NCR
Not sure what that means.
Here is a shot of the Leece Neville unit in my truck...reason I am posting this is to show where the ground wire mounts to the alternator mount bracket:

Oh, you can see the ground wire mount on the Prestolite unit just below the wire cover in the first pic and a little below the stud with the nut in the 2nd.
Thanks brute4c. got it running today seems to be working properly. where the epoxy is on yours is about where my second stud is. thanks again for all your help!
by the way only one belt seems to line up worth a crap, any suggestions. alt has 3 grooves water and crank have 4.
2 wires in and 1 coming out...a stud underneath...wonder if I cleaned theat stuff out if I would find all the wires hooked to that stud as the connector...
Glad you got it running!!
Hmmm...on the not lined up part...you are sure the pulley is tight on the shaft? If it is fully seated, is the alternators front top ear mounted in front of the slide adjustment bar? I think it wont fit the other way but what the heck...
Might be able to space the upper and lower mount ears forward with a washer or 2....well maybe not...I think the way the lower mounts are, it wont go forward...
It will work on 1 belt...better to have 2 though...
Yep pulley is seated. fits pretty tight inlower mounts dont think I can space.
Yeah, looking at the diagram, I see that its not gonna go forward...yikes...not sure what you can do...
Is the upper mount bent some maybe?
How far off is it? Could it be a wrong pulley that wont match up well no matter what?
dont know much about the pulley. came from boyce equipment and they said it was specific to the M715. unless the crank pulley was changed. guess I will check more tonight.
