If you find a California emmission 6.2, the Engine Speed Sensor is located on top of the vacuum pump. This sensor can be used to drive a quality gasoline engine tach with a few modifications. The entire process is detailed in the book by Lee Swanger titled "6.2 diesel engine vol II" available from thedieselpage.com. Since they're selling this, I'm sure they'd frown on me posting it in detail here, but it is not expensive.
