Looking for known registration numbers

Ok this is something that has come up recently and is a data base I would like to work on. I'm looking to reference known original hood registration numbers with their VIN number and date of delivery and model of truck. I'm doing this to see if we can understand better the correlation of them all. And over the years I have collected a few and if I had a larger sample to work from it would help others trying to find their lost numbers. If you are reluctant to post your VIN # you can always PM it to me so that I can work on it and compare to the list here on the M715zone.

I'll start with my 67' M715 #14420 8-67 3F 5836
and my 67' M725 #11515 10-67 3F 2473

Would it be safe to assume if I found serial #'s that were below and above me and then also had their registration numbers below and above me I could work backwards and find some history then on my vehicle? (registration numbers were sanded off by DNR/fire dept repaint :( )

That is the hope, that if we can determine the pattern then we would be able to help figure the registration numbers for those who have lost them.

The Vin Registry (above) would be a great place to include known Registration Numbers.

Seeing as we know "14711 Aug-67 3F 7198" then there is a good chance that yours' being the next one down in vin would likely be 3F 7197. This is the whole purpose of me trying to find known registration numbers so that I can help those members who can't find one left on their truck.

Where else should I look if my hood has no numbers (painted as a brush truck)?

The hood and the tailgate are the two most common places that the registration numbers where placed. If your truck survived in the Army long enough that it made it to the subdued and camo era's then sometimes people will find it painted on inside door panels or under the hood and I know one guy who found it on the inside of the glovebox door.

Not stamped. It would have been on the hood, each side and on the lower portion of the tailgate. Curiously, in the photos of my truck in 1970, Neu Ulm Germany, the unit markings were in white whilst the truck markings are in satin black in keeping with the "new" European subdued markings. These are actual vintage photographs.

Yes the registration numbers are either painted or decaled onto the vehicles. This number was assigned to the vehicle at the time of acceptance into the military and served as the military's "serial number" for the vehicle. The military did not go by the VIN number when it was in service, they used the registration number to keep track of it.

Wow, that's a unique one! That is an earlier vin# and lower hood registration number but delivered in early 68' I wonder if it had some problems on the assembly line and had to be re-sent through after it had a vin and registration number assigned to it. That vin should have came out in the batch around 9/67' which would have been a little ahead of my 10/67' M725 which is vin 11515 and registration number of 3F 2473.

I no longer have the truck but here is the data. The numbers were found under the civilian paint on tailgate and hood.

I'm pretty certain on the Reg #, I found a piece of paper from back when i restored it that I had written on. I seems accurate from what I can tell from reading through the posts about the formatting of the number.

Yes the M725's had different serial numbers and where delivered at different times.

After 10 + years with my 715, I'm finally thinking about ordering a set of hood numbers and markings.

I want to be a little different by going with subdued markings which are black.
Are there any pictures of 24087 painted trucks with the subdued markings? I've only seen it on tan camo in Germany. Is there a way to confirm it to be correct?

From the info above, Looks like 3F XXX 68. I wish we had a more January 68s to tell us their hood numbers to get a closer guess. If not, might go with 3F20068.

I don't believe I will include the bridge plate number on the door, tire pressures, or "over fill" fuel markings. I want to keep it simple.

Yes I have seen some pics of trucks in Germany in the early 70's with subdued black markings. One of the members here has posted some pics of the one he drove while there. I have since found a data base that has quite a large bit of info on the registration numbers compared to the vin numbers. What is funny is that your vin number is out of order for being a 1968 truck. The vast majority of 1968 trucks start around the 22000 vin number. And there are even some late 1967 trucks that have 68' style registration numbers meaning they were built at the tail end of 67' but not accepted by the Army until 68'. But what's funny is that the closest vin on my list to yours
is 19271 and it also shows a 1968 build date but has a hood registration number of 3G0617 which is a 67' style hood number. Makes me wonder if there was a group of units from around then that got assigned the registration numbers but didn't pass final inspection and had to go back through to be refitted with something which pushed their completed date back into early 1968. Is yours a 100 amp truck? that might be what caused the delay. anyway it looks like yours should be 3G0620.

At your service! I drove this truck for a year in Germany. Note, the subdued numbers were on the hood, no black star and tire pressure was in black. Unit number and truck number was white on the bumpers. As you can see, it was a 1968 by the last two numbers, "68".

I think that there is a limit of four pictures per thread. So, I will continue below.

More pictures, same truck. You can see that being a 1968 truck, it did not have the hood mounted air cleaner. However.... my 1969 M715/M724 does not have one either! Quite a twisted web and it took me years to figure out where my truck probably originated.

NOTE: The engine picture is of the M715 that I had in Germany, not my present M715.

Let me possibly reinforce that theory. If you look at the serial number of my truck, it is nowhere near what a 1969 should be. Complicating that is the fact that it has no governor or air cleaner on the hood as a 1969 would have. That eventually led to the conclusion that my truck started out as an M724.

I remember when we got brand new M715 trucks in Bremerhaven. I was one of the troops that drove them off of the boat and quickly noticed that something was different. Governor! They were new 1969 trucks. My two previous two trucks were 1967, Ft. Sill and Utah and 1968 Neu Ulm, Germany.

This picture is a 1967 that I had in Blanding, UT. (Truth be known, I still have not decided which way to go with my truck now!)

All this information on markings got me to thinking about an question I had posted awhile back about Air Force stateside paint . Would like to go Air Force blue as truck is faded CAP blue now.. Any new info would be appreciated..KyKen glad to see your posting...

I have the 60amp alternator if that's what you are referring to. No governor and carb mounted air cleaner.

3G0620 ('67# but delivered early in '68) sounds good to me! Makes the most sense.

I used the 'F' because there is a January '68 M725 listed above that used it. Don's '68 in the picture is a 'J'. Amazing!

Don, Do you remember any other trucks with black stars? I might want them for the doors. What's that called? Artistic license? lol
