I'm trying to get a M715 in running condition. Engine has a hole in #3 piston nd the head is messed up from droping a valve. Question is, should I take the old engine to the scrap yard, or for the sake of owning a mil vehicle rebuild the mil engine that is in there.

Depends what you want...
The 230 is expensive to rebuild...figure over $1000 before you get to fixing any internal damage or custom work...thats if you do the bulk yourself.
If you want to stay with the original 230, as opposed to a newer engine, you might look for one where someone is swapping theirs out. Often they are low mileage and not expensive.
I agree with Brute. Unless you have time and money on your hands it would be quicker and less expensive to swap the engine for another 230. There are folks on here doing all sorts of mods to V8s and diesel etc so I'm sure their old engine could be had for next to nothing.
If you want to keep the stock and original then you want to keep the stock motor. If you don't care about that then do a swap. IMHO the stock M715 is going to increase in value over time where as the modified truck wont.
If you need a set of new in the box pistons, I'll send you the full set if you'll just pay shipping.
Robs got a good head.He replaced entire engine because of poor compression. I'll ask him if he plans on keeping it.
I'm in the process of pulling everything off all sides to keep as spares and was thinking of scrapping the rest. Valve cover to oil pan is intact and was running when I pulled it.
Well after inspecting this engine, looks like it will need a new head for starters and with the slop in the pistons and ridge in the cylinders a balance and blueprint job. So thats out of the question.
I did get a spare engine with this truck, PO said it was rebuilt. Maybe a J.C. Whitney $150.00 rebuild. it has a droped valve in #6 with no head damage, but will need a piston and valve work. I dont know about putting a new piston in a engine and repairing a head on a engine that has a iffy past.
So Looks like my best option is to find a running engine or at least a long block That does not need to be opened up.
Why did you pull your engine in down there in MD?

If you're asking me, it was like vrod said, it seemed to lack power. It appeared to take 2-3 compression strokes to get to 150psi. I never could get my timing light to sync on no.1 cylinder so troubleshooting it was becoming difficult. fng had his old motor for sale and I was going to be in that area...
