M101 Safety Chains
I should know this as we hauled the M101 in the 60's and 70's but can't remember where the safety chains go on the '715. The M101 I got from GL is 100% stock and those chains will not fit on the rear shackles and are not long enough to wrap around the shackles. I won't be ready to tow for some time but this struck me while reassembling the rear end of my truck.

The last one I saw hooked to a M715 had the chains hanging from the shackles like they should. Normal 101 chains will reach a M35 shackle on both sides, so if yours don't reach, the chains may have been shortened is my guess.

I have some longer trailer chains if yours don't work.

The way I read this...are you saying that the hook on the 101 chain isn't big (open) enough to slip over the 715 shackle?? And that the chain is too short to go thru the shackle and hook back on itself??

Chains
Yep, the opening in the hook will not fit on the shackle and if you would try to wrap around the shackle and hook back to the chain, it's too short. These trailers were used with the HUMVEEs later in life so probably the chains were modified.

I got 3 or 4 sets of 101 chains. If I can remember, I'll measure the length and hook opening on them for comparison and post up.
